Now for the bad news!

The machine was coaxed back to happy life, only to have the front motor bearing chew up and die in the third rinse, unfortunately.

Since the motor's NLA, and no one seems able to repair the toasted sleeve bearing in this town, we're on a hunt for a new motor. Hopefully we'll come across one; if not, we'll have to find another machine from which to pilfer parts.

Does anyone know of a place to snag a motor? Do the newer-style machines (like Austin's) use the same 1/3 HP, 1725 RPM motor with three terminals?

Inquiring minds (who wish to end the silence of the Westinghouse) want to know

OMG what a let down for you guys! That is a beautiful machine nonetheless and I'm sure you'll be able to work out something. I've found the exact same thing with small motor servicing, unless you can work on it yourself, there are very few people who will even look at it. Can you get the bearing out of the motor? Perhaps you could take it to a bearing shop and find a replacement bearing. Check with Larry at Modern Parts House in Parma, OH for a replacement motor - your part number is 1586-206 although Larry will probably know it from memory. 216-661-6966. Sorry I don't have that motor in stock, but look what I do have! Send me your address via email and it's yours.

Nate if the sleeve bearing is bad, can you press the bearing out and take it into a local bearing dealer to have them measure it for a replacement? I did this for the sleeve bearing for the pump in my Youngstown dishwasher and found the exact bearing.

Yes, Steve, that's a Hotpoint Roger's leaning on. It's our DirtyLittleSecret--both Ross and Roger have Hotpoints now (Roger's is standard capacity like my Filter-Flo; Ross' is the extra-large capacity). They kick butt and are fun to watch; the agitation is aggressive, the "self-cleaning" lint ring is fun, and the absence of a Filter-Flo pan means you can watch it all

Terry--I'll e-mail you soon, I promise We'll get it going somehow, even if I end up having to go motor-comparing. That machine's too much fun and in too good of shape to toss for want of a nail, as it were . We'll just learn patience...and antici...

Nate you forgot to mention the lint balls in the filter ring on the hotpoints!!!!

Oh yeah, the lint balls are great on the lint rings. Plus, it's like a simulated jet-circle fill, as the fresh water is piped into the lint ring, and a halo of water comes in from all around the tub!

If the motor is the type that is bolted together, it can be rewound if a replacement motor can't be found.

Well, how about the NEXT town?

Tucson isn't a "backwater" town, I can't imagine it doesn't have a small motor repair SOMEWHERE. Worst case scenario, it may have to sent somewhere

Nate, If you can get it apart you also have the option of taking it to a machine shop. They can mic the OD of the bearing and the OD of the shaft and make one from these deminsions.

Nate, I do believe the POD with the pennys flying out of the westy into the housewife's apron did have dispensers on top. I believe that model was a 1962 or 1963. Yours looks to be like 1960 or 1961. I know for sure the TOL flat-front had dispenseers.

I love those potato-pulley slant-fronts, they have much more "character" than the flat-front machines, IMHO. My absolute dream machine is the POD that Bob mentioned...I'd probably collapse on the spot if I saw one of those!
