Question for Whirlpool/Kenmore washer experts

Would anyone here know if the tubs on this Kenmore would be the same size as those on the 62 Whirlpool I got a couple years ago with the rusted-out outer tub? My guess is the tubs on the Kenmore are probably larger but wanted to ask because I know others here will know specifics. And also up to what year will interchange. I've been keeping my eyes open for a donor machine for a replacement outer tub for the Whirlpool. Another option as was suggested back when I got the WP would be to find another machine and install the WP top onto it.

So I did a little clean up on the washer over the weekend. Also got the top off. Found some more mice activity on the tub ring. The inner tub cleaned up pretty well but there is a little rust around some of the bottom holes. Until I get the spanner nut wrench I ordered I wont know what lies in...

Hi Ken,

First, the machine you are hoping to use as a tub donor is a direct drive. The direct drive tub is not compatible at all with a belt drive.

The machine pictured has a belt -drive counterpart, but the belt drive version does not have the black curved strip in the fill portion of the cotton sturdy cycle, and it has three water levels instead of two. If this were a belt-drive, it would not have a compatible tub, as tubs in 24-inch machines are slightly shallower and narrower than their 29-inch counterparts. None of the components besides the agitator are common in the basket and tub area between 24-inch and 29-inch belt drives.

You will find a tub eventually, and I am sorry this won't work for you.

Compatible tubs

The last machines made with a tub that would be a 100% match to this one would be something from the early 1970s. Beyond that, a new pump was developed by 1974 that gets water for the manual lint filter through the manifold trap instead of a filter port. An exception to this would be suds models (they did not use the new pump) but they were rare, especially in standard capacity by then.

You could use tubs with more or fewer ports, but with fewer ports you would lose the filter, and more ports would require filling the holes, with bleach hoses or a tub mounted self-cleaning filter, etc.
