why replace such NICE kitchen equipment
I can see a "green" argument for replacing an old refrigerator -- at least when one looks only at electricity usage. I saw a noticeable drop in my electricity bill when I replaced a 1966 side-by-side with a 2001. The '66 had a heated butter compartment, and heated gasket sealing surfaces to prevent condensation and mildew. I'm sure its compressor was also less efficient.
On the other hand, the '66 was still working (after I'd fixed the icemaker). The 2001 developed various problems, which I fixed, until it developed a noisy compressor shut-off last year -- both an annoyance and potentially a sign of future compressor failure. So, I bought a 2013 GE Cafe french door model (beautiful, BTW) and moved the 2001 to the basement as a back-up fridge.
Knowing what I know now about old appliances, I might have hung on to the '66, and just eaten the higher electrical bills. OTOH, I do really like the new (2013) fridge.
