The monochromatic white in reply #2 was the model my mom had.  She got it, and matching gas dryer, at Circuit City sometime in 1995 or early 1996 before the chain closed down.

Martin  I never looked at the energy saver switch as simply dumbing down the temp.  I looked at it as giving one an option for 5 different wash temperatures and 3 rinse temperatures.  Just more laundry flexibility to meet special load needs.

the match to my just turned 25 year old dryer is the LAT9824.

Well, my mom could have cared less about 4-speed combos, two was more her "style".  The Filter-Flo that preceded it was 2-speed also.  The Kenmore800 preceded the Filter Flo and I doubt she knew what the difference was between Perm Press & Normal.

Also, I never saw anything above the 9804 at Sears, Montgomery Wards, Best Buy, or Circuit City.  You had to go to an independent Maytag Dealer to get a 9824.  (That's where I got my dryer).

Takes a lickin'...

I had the model one down from this model; it was my daily driver for years. Good machine but there were a few disappointments:

1. It had the short quick stroke agitation (members more talented than me would've likely changed the belt and souped it up). I swapped out the lame white finned agitator with the old-fashioned turquoise Power Fin. Much better but I wondered if the greater strain would hurt the machine.

2. It had a niggardly spray rinse, about 10 seconds; I tried changing the cycle control to up the spray rinse to 1 minute but the new volume of water slowed the spin down to a crawl.

3. It had a ridiculously short final deep rinse, 2 minutes. What was Maytag thinking that year?

4. On the positive side, it still works. I gave it to a friend of mine and it's still plugging away.

It's still much better than all of the new garbage offered in the stores.

Oy.
