Good morning all!

I have a "MW Signature" range hood that needs to be removed. We have not decided if we are going to re-use it or not. However, when we opened the top filter portion of the hood, we noticed very questionable filters.

1. Is this asbestos? I wouldn't think they would build filters from the stuff, but I have no idea.

2. We have never heard of a "MW" product. Have any details?

Sorry in advance for the poor photography skills.

monkey wards

MW=montgemery wards.Unlikely the filter material is asbestos-more likely fiberglass matting.A grease filter of matted aluminum strands is the usual for older range hoods.

"MW Signature" = Montgomery Wards

The hood is from Montgomery Ward. "Signature" was a brand name they used on a lot of products.

The filters are probably fiberglass, not asbestos. You can replace them with filters from one of the several online companies offering range hood filters for older and obsolete hoods. Just Google "range hood filters."

Getting a range hood down is usually a matter of turning off the power to the unit, disconnecting the power, removing the screws underneath the hood that fasten it to the cabinets above and lowering the hood.

Thanks guys!

The goal is to reconfigure the kitchen this fall. I have always liked this range hood. Hopefully it makes the cut now that I feel more comfortable knowing it's most likely fiberglass.
