Removing Whirly Softener Dispenser?

I'd like to remove the agitator-mounted softener dispenser from my Whirly Design 2000 machine for a thorough cleaning. When I installed the softener, it just snapped into place in place of the agitator cap, but it's sure as hell not snapping off easily.

Any suggestions?
