Hello All,

When I bought and renovated my house almost 5 years ago, I bought a Jenn-Air kitchen appliance package. The dishwasher worked well in the beginning, but I’ve had problems with it the past couple of years. The dispenser opens during the pre-wash instead of the main wash, releasing the detergent too early. Then either the fan stopped working reliably or it doesn’t run long enough, leaving tons of condnsation on the door and the dishes (glassware included) - even with the chamber filled with Jet Dry. I had a repairman come out and look at it a couple of months ago and he said that the dispenser needs to be replaced, and that was $265.00. I decided to hold off for a while, as I now use tabs.

As of today, the machine no longer runs. It is beeping incessantly and then shuts off - stopping the wash after only a couple of minutes. I have turned off the breaker for several minutes and then back on, and it still doesn’t work after the reset. Needless to say I’ve not been happy with the machine.

I’m trying to decide whether I should just buy a new one and get what I want, or if I should call a repairman for this one. When I renovated my office building a couple of years ago, I purchased a Kitchenaid that I really love. I want a similar model to that one, but I want the third rack for utensils.

It seems a bit extravagant to just replace the unit without trying to repair mine first, but I suspect that labor and materials will be close to 50% or more of the cost for the new one (for a machine I don’t really like). The one I want is on sale. The only other issue is that while the new one will fit in with the rest of the kitchen appliances, it won’t be an exact match to my other appliances like my current dishwasher.

Thoughts on the sitution or the new machine?

Model numbers help!

It is easier to recommend a repair or replacement based on the model number of your current machine. That way we can compare the design of it to what you are looking to buy and compare features as well.

Please provide the model number and let's see where we go from there.

Brian, instead of what you provided the link to, I'd look at Lowes for the KDTM404 or KDTM704. I have the Kenmore Elite equivalent of the KDTM704 with interior lights. It's extremely quiet. I don't like models that begin with KDTE. And you know you can always call me.

Repair Or Replace A JA DW

Yes a model# could help, I would generally recommend repair, but you should get in touch with JA as this is WPs premium appliance line they may give you some help with the repair, also note the electronic controls may have a 5 year warranty, and even if you are just past the 5 yr period I would still complain [ nicely ]

Thanks everyone. I will get the model number of my current machine when I get home this evening.

Bob - I was originally comparing the KDTM404ESS against he KDTE254ESS. I really liked the 404, but I was attracted to the significant discount on the 254. I know the 404 has the Clean Water Wash instead of the Global Wash Filter, but the other few differences didn’t seem to be terribly significant to me. What are the features that are most important to you? You have great taste in machines! The 704 seems amazing, but more than I want to pay at the moment.

John - Thanks for the advice. Inwill call them first thing in the morning and see what kind of headway I can make.

Brian, the one you've picked out is essentially the same as your JA with 3rd rack added. I'd just go with that given the price. They're trying to get rid of old stock. Close-out.

westtexman: I had a repairman come out and look at it a couple of months ago and he said that the dispenser needs to be replaced, and that was $265.00.
Brian, I find the dispenser for $56.92 (possibly can be found for less). $265 quote presumably includes service call/labor. You couldn't have DIYed that repair? Too bad you're so far away, I would have done it for you at no cost other than the part.

However, beeping and shuts off now could be a stuck key on the panel or a bad control board which brings in more parts cost.
