RETRO FRIDAY--ELECTRIC HAIR CURLERS

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I remember my older sister had them.

There was a red dot in the center of the curler that turned to black when heated to proper temp.

I just wish I still had enough hair to wrap around a curler.

Funny stories about these-

I remember my mom having these the moment they came out. I was fascinated with them and watching the red dot become very dark when they were ready / hot .

I was touring a Marilyn Monroe exhibit several years ago it was on the Queen Mary. They had a set of these Kindness Hairsetter / Rollers in the exhibit with blonde hair claiming that these rollers were Miss. Monroe's and her hair was the hair left in the rollers. When I asked the guide how Miss. Monroe had her hair set after she died? He looked at me like I was crazy. I advised him, "she died in 1963 and those rollers were not produced until 1969". Shortly afterwards there were several items that were "de" authenticated and removed from the Long Beach / Queen Mary exhibit.

Never saw these before because my mom, grandmas, and  my wife never went in for hot rollers.  On occasion my wife will still set her hair with the brush-type rollers using Dippity-do, especially if she wants a tighter, longer lasting curl.  Otherwise, it's the curling brush for daily use.

recognize the woman in the commercial?

Any of you recognize the woman who did this Clairol Kindness commercial?

It's Sunny Griffin, supermodel of the sixties. She has done many TV ads and appeared as "Ruth" in the Dustin Hoffman/Mia Farrow movie, "John and Mary".

Can you believe she is going to turn 75 this year? She is still active promoting her skin care line of cosmetics (Astara) and is a advocate of a diet rich in raw fruits and vegetables.

By the way the jingle in the ad is driving me crazy as its stuck in my head, I got out of bed this morning and all that was on my mind was "curlers, curlers, curlers, shame on you!"

My sister had these curlers.

I was the same watching the red dot turn black. They always had a odor about them when hot. I wonder if the hot plastic gave off toxic fumes ? Oh well, so many things were untested back then.

My mother used to chase my sister around the house with a hot curling iron. My sister hated it. I think my mother burned her scalp a few times with the iron. I think my sister was 8 or 9 at the time.
