Hey Lou.

My grandma has a breast cancer limited edition version of the Roomba. She used it for a long time. But it wasn't deep cleaning her carpets all that well. She still uses it every once in a while to sweep some crumbs and stuff off, but still used a regular eureka smart vac upright to clean the carpet once a week.

Neat little vacuums they are!

We have a Roomba and although it does a decent job on our wood floors, I'm not a big fan of it. I'm not sure why I don't like it, I guess I feel like it's a bit of a scam. I think my wife's parents bought it for her as a b-day present or something. When it's running around and banging into everything, and getting stuck between chair legs under the dinette, I just want to punt it right out the back door into the yard.

Our "real" vacuum is a Royal Metal Upright that I purchased brand new about 25 years ago. I'm a huge Royal Vac fan.

My Roomba works very well on my tile, which is all the house except the three bedrooms.  They're mechanical sweepers moreso than vacuums, so it doesn't work as well on plush carpet.  I don't let it go in the bedrooms.

I'm sure it's great on floors and maybe even for surface pick up on carpets, but hard to believe it would deep clean well on plush carpets. And more important, it wouldn't leave uniform vacuum lines on the carpet, which any vac nut has to have.

I love my Roomba. I have all hardwoods and it is great for keeping the pet hair under control. I also have a Scooba (robotic mop) and it works good unless the floor is really really dirty, then I use a regular mop.

Several years ago my crazy sister built a 5,000sqft house. Most of it is carpet. She threw away her Kirby and only uses a Roomba.
That was 6 years ago. She is still only using the Roomba. She has pretty thick carpet, so I wonder what the place looks like now? After the last trip three years ago, I haven't been back since.
She gave us a Roomba around the same time for our house. It does clean hard flooring like the kitchen and foyer very well, but all it really does on carpet is pick up dog hair. After a year the battery died and we never replaced it.

Nothing beats the power of a Miele!

I have an Electrolux Trilobite and an original style Roomba silver model.

The Electrolux is more elegant in execution of its duties, but the Roomba removed more hair from a synthetic looped-pile rug.

The Electrolux works fine on all depths of carpets; the Roomba is best suited to short-pile carpets.

The Electrolux is better built; the Roomba feels flimsy in comparison.

Threw out a Kirby in favor of a Roomba?Got to be kidding!I would LOVE to go over that persons carpet with my Kirby and dirtmeter and see just what the Roomba LEFT?The Roomba is just a glorified carpet-floor surface sweeper.Maybe nice for routine pickups-but for DEEP CLEANING-you need that Kirby!

The Sanitaire would indeed be up there with the Kirby-It too, would pick up what the Roomba left.In fact when I read the side of the package the Roomba comes in at the store-they even recommend cleaning with a conventional vacuum as well as the Roomba. The Sanitaire is another good deep cleaner with Royals and Riccar,Simplicity hybrid vacuums, and older Hoover and eureka direct air uprights.

Yep

I love my bagged vacuums! :)

Used to have 2 sanitaires. I sent one to another collector who was building 2 of them in the S677d style out of other machines.

The other one went to odowds vacuums for work on the custom 344 commercial convertible.

Sanitaires I personally find, are one of the best deep cleaning vacuums you can get anywhere. Retrofit a VG3 brush roll in it and its unstoppable! They sound very nice too.
