Also cannot be tied down very well in the windows opening

I think a saddle type of unit would be a good solution if they make them in the dimensions you need.  I assume they cost more than a plain old window unit, though.

I installed one of the U shaped ACs for a relative, nice unit.  Very quiet. and efficient.  But - minimum window size is important.  Her window was just a shade smaller than minimum and it was a difficult install.  Had to remove the sash and reinstall it after the unit was in place.
