an interesting link on when our banking system failed back in the 30's. I think I'm going to pull an amount of cash out of my bank to have on-hand in case they get closed for a week.
It probably won't happen, but hey, I didn't think the recent failures would happen either.

Boy I wish we had the quality of leadership today that Roosevelt offered during that time. Don't let the Neo-cons and think-tank knuckle heads fool you, this was a great man.

Mike

I'm glad you posted that video link. Most people seem to have forgotten that what Roosevelt did in those early years of his administration saved the country. Roosevelt had a great National Health Care Plan that he was going to put into effect in 1942 but when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor that put an end to it. I have always believed that plan should be studied and considered again.

In recent years Franklin Roosevelt has become the whipping post for conservative talk show hosts who really don't know much about the history of the nation. It will be interesting in coming decades to see the history of this unfortunate time period written. History will not smile on this current administration. It is by far the worst in the entire history of the nation.

When my great grandmother got her first social security check she cashed it and hid the money. She thought the government was paying the family back for the damage Union troops did to the family home during the Civil War (she was born in 1864 and died in 1968). My grandmother would not turn her gold in when it was recalled. She said Mr. Roosevelt could have her vote but not her gold. We found gold coins sewed into the lining of her winter coat when she passed away. She had even sewed money ito the hem of her bedroom curtains.

With the current steps being taken I hope we will not see things as bad as our grandparents did.

Greg,

I think we shall. The idiot republicans have learned nothing from the past. Laissez faire capitalism does not work, nor was it ever intended to be the system of this country.
Idiots.
FDR, just as Carnegie in the 1890's, did a lot of things to save this country which, looked at by themselves, very bad economics. But when tens of thousands of people are starving (yes, conservatives, it was that bad) and the country is facing anarchy, having a president with brains helps.

Could we possibly have one thread that doesn't turn political/ugly?

1- Just because something is believed passionately doesn't make it so; or not so.

2- Multipe-choice questions that include answers with "Always" or "Never" are usually not the best answer. (i.e. They tend to be false statements). Sometimes things do not fall perfeclty into nice, neat perfectly-defined categories.

3-In order for there to be a magnificent benevolent all-encompassing G-d, for most people there needs to be a Devil scape-goat.

Perhaps, just perhaps, the world is not so black-and-white. Remember what is good to/for you may be bad to/for me.

Also: there are 3 sides to every story, yours, mine and "the" truth. As limited human beings that are bound to the false concept of "time", we can not possibly "know" and understand everything, and certainly not with 100% clarity.

There is good and bad in everyhing and everyone, including all political ideologies. Question is, does the good outweigh the bad in that time and circumstance.

So let's all play nice and not throw sand in the sandbox.
We enjoy learning about everyone here, as well as those who fear the "Christianists", those who fear the sociaists; those who fear the North and the Union and resent who won the US Civil War, those who harp on their losses/deaths, those who go off on their manic and violent states etc, etc, etc. I'm sure also that my quirks [as few and far betwen as they are! LOL ROLF LMAO] and personality and twistedness are "fun" (*cough*) yet predicatable as well.

As one big family, we need to look past the quirks. Hammering nails into a fence (attacking others) then apologizing (removing the nails) still leaves scars.

I love all of you with all your twists and faults and quirks and yes, well, sometimes stupidity and forgive you for it. (We all have weak moments). Just as I hope that I am forgiven for all of mine.

So as they say in my church, with fear, faith, love and reverence of G-d (or insert Moses, Buddah, Allah, Rudoph the red-nosed reindeer's deer's bung-hole, etc) come forth and let's move on!

Can I get an AMEN, brothas and sistahs....
Can I get a Hallelujah, my dear sistahs...

So dears, I remove my soap-box from beghind the pulpit and take off the Papal roebs used while pontificating.......

Just because our political belifs differ does not mean we need to be enemies.

Yesterday I was engaged in a telephone conversation with a dear close friend who is a staunch conservative Republican. Later that day I had dinner with a friend who is going to help Obama's campaign. The friendships endure.

Too much said.

Strong middle class thanks to Roosevelt

Roosevelt laid the ground work in the 30's and 40's for a strong Middle class of the 50's and 60's! And the republicans could not wait to undo everything that president did. This country owes him an immeasurable amount of gratitude. When he took office this country was sliding very fast toward and violent over throw of the government.
This was because of the do nothing policies of the two preceding republican administrations (Coolidge/ Hoover). "Let Business be they know what is best for the country" …They know what is best for them selves and the stock holders. The republicans HATED that prosperity was spread to the masses and was not just for the ruling class.
Don’t get me wrong there are something's that do well in free markets, but health Insurance in not one of them and Roosevelt knew it.
Health insurance is the perfect example. It was left to free market and business and it started out covering EVERYONE then the free markets and business found they could increase their profits/greed, If the stopped covering the people that the Free Markets found to be high risk or a preexisting Medical condition. Then as they weeded these people out they found that they still needed greater profits because they had dropped a large portion of Premium paying customers, plus the cost of medical care was increasing.
Even the Insurance companies are getting out of the business because they see it coming. In Business Speak there is a Market Adjustment coming and they want to get out while the getting is good.
Mutual of Omaha has gotten out of health care they now are a Bank. ..GEE ! I wonder were they amassed a large amount of capital to set up a bank ? Do you think is was keeping health care cost down for their insured customers? I don't think so, it was by keeping premiums high and health insurance exclusionary.
Many of you do not know that this former Health insurance company is funding one of the biggest private developments that this city has seen in a long time.
These Insurance Companies know they can not keep squeezing the public. There is only so much blood you can get out of group before they wise up. If we do not wise up there will be two classes in this country The sinfully rich, and the sinfully poor. and
I'm a registered Republican.

There is a growing class division in the country to add to the problems. When Roosevelt took office in 1933 there were over 13 million unemployed and almost all banks were closed. Roosevelt proposed, and Congress enacted, sweeping legislation to bring recovery back to business and agraculture, relief to the unemployed and to help those in danger of loosing their homes. And he introduced the TVA.

By 1935 the country was doing better but the republican party fought the New Deal programs at every turn. They called the Great Depression a "Market Correction" which is correct in financial terms but -it does nothing to help the people turned out in the streets because of bad business and banking practices. Roosevelt responded with the introduction of Social Security. It had a much different meaning back then than it does today. When the rublicans tried to dismantel New Deal programs through the Supreme Court Roosevelt lost that battle but he did manage to bring about great revisions in Constitutional Law.

I think we are just watching another chapter of what started in the '30's. Republicans call for smaller government yet the population is not getting any smaller. We have Corporate Welfare at the expense of social well being.

No, maybe have not seen the worst of it. But one thing is certain. The America we knew growing up is gone forever. Corporate greed and neither political party being willing to do what is right for the future of the nation is at the root of the trouble.

Supposedly our government has plans in place to quell civil unrest should it emerge. But looking at New Orleans brings that into question. Personally I like Jefferson's ideas on democracy.

we'll all agree.....

that the quality and intelligence of leadership during a time of crisis is possibly the single most important asset they can bring to that job. We might disagree on what the definition of quality and intelligence is, etc. etc. but once you've experienced it there is a lasting impression left. I've experienced it at times in business, when a person that is in charge rises to a difficult occasion and does what's best for the organization and not just their personal interest. That's what Roosevelt did, he rose to the occasion and tried to his best ability to do what was best for the many and not just the few. Just an incredible person who got better as time went on. I think Roosevelt is now my favorite president after Lincoln. What an incredible person.
