Just picked up a little electric kettle at Costco this afternoon. It's a Saeco product, and man, is it FAST!

It has some nifty features... in addition to boiling nearly 1/2 gallon of water in less than 2 minutes, it also has four temp settings: boil (212F), high (200F), medium (150F), and low (100F). It will shut off immediately or keep things at a selected temp for two hours. It also has led lighting that illuminates the translucent upper part of the carafe with green, blue, violet, or red depending on the temp selected or reach, as well as a digital readout of the actual temp of the water.

I intend to bring this thing to work, cause there's no hot water dispenser there and I do like to have some tea or chai or hot cocoa from time to time.

I might even get a second one for home - it will be nice in the winter.

Sipping some Oolong tea (Ti Kuan Yin) I just made with the kettle set to High (200F). Would have preferred a 190F setting for Oolong but the initial temp was more like 190F anyway, which is just about perfect for this brew. The Medium (150F) setting should be good for Green tea and maybe for instant chai/cocoa as well. In any case, the Oolong I just made seems to have come out good: naturally sweet, smooth, full-bodied with just a hint of bitter. It's a special tea, a gift from my Mandarin instructor last spring. Came in a beautiful gilded box. Will be hard to find more when it runs out. Probably top of the line when it comes to Ti Kuan Yin.

Of course, I brewed the tea is a little teapot - a glass globe affair with a removable fine mesh stainless tea basket. At work I'll probably use teabags, though.

Looks like a wonderful kettle, and very fast! I'll have to keep watch for this one. Has a lot of features I want on my next one, such as being able to keep the water warm. The different temps are really interesting too!

Scott, I might of underestimated the amount of time it takes to boil nearly two quarts (50 oz). Might be more like five minutes. Still, it's fast. I'll have to time it next time.

It sure has all the bells and whistles I was looking for, and at a reasonable price ($35 in store, $39 on their web site). I've passed up on some pump-style water "kettles", such as Zojirushi, because 1) They are pricey, over $100, and 2) They seem a bit awkward to fill and operate.

This one also beeps at you when it gets to temp, just in case you don't have a clear line of sight to see the color change.

As soon as you lift the kettle, the heat shuts off, but it's easy enough just to push the temp button to get it to maintain whatever of the three keep warm temps you want. You can ever set it to come to a full boil, and then cool down to one of the three keep warm temps. Kind of handy if the water is of iffy quality, I suppose.

The thing draws 1500 watts, which I suppose helps to explain its rapid heating.

OK, now I'm gonna have to fill it up and time a boil... back in five minutes or so...

It's About Time

OK, the stopwatch doesn't lie.

50 oz. cold tap water to 212F boiling: about six minutes 25 seconds.

Sure seemed like 2 minutes when I was first setting it up ;-).

190 F took about five minutes.

Less water (like 1 qt) would probably be faster.

Still fast enough for me...

Saeco

I really wasn't aware they produce kettles too !

Indeed on their website they show espresso machines only

I do believe it works great ... everywhere in Italy cooking/food culture has a relevant place.... but Saeco works are in Bologna nearby , where cooking is somewhat higher, close to art or religion.
Maybe D.J.Gabriele who lives there can explain better than me :-)
