Saw Ad for Maytag A406 / DE606 Pair in Rye, NH for $100

I was looking at Maytag ads and bumped into the an ad for a very nice looking Maytag A406 / DE606 set in Harvest Gold from 1971 that looks to be in excellent shape, with an asking price of only $100. They're not what I'm looking for, but somebody here might really appreciate them.

They appear to have been very well cared for -- original manuals and all!

I would note that I have no connection whatsoever with the seller -- I just happened to notice the ad and thought others here may be interested.

They showed good judgement in getting the electronic control dryer over the time/temp auto-dry 406 model.

Is that a single speed machine with a large tub?  If so, it's an interesting model.

It's called a Fabric-Matic. It alternately agitates and soaks for delicates to give them a longer exposure to the detergent bath than a shorter wash at slow speed. It made sense if you used a higher water level for delicates.

not judgmental because we have an interest in machines...

but you have to wonder, why get rid of a tried and true set of excellent working machines....

sometimes you want to keep and run things until they can't operate anymore.....

any one today is looking for the new HE machines, but skeptical about longevity, in asking whats the best ones to get...and there are few to consider...check any reviews recently, and their not looking good....its hit or miss on getting a good one....at those prices, a huge gamble...

this set for example, granted its harvest gold....and their in the basement, not like there has to be a matching set, or their redecorating...

I say this about them, put them aside, and buy your new set....if those dont make it past 3 to 5 years, then at least you have these to put back in place.....

how many times have we seen people wishing for their old vintage set back!

this falls the same for people who get Central Air installed, and then sell off all their window units....if one window unit goes down, a little rough, but not so bad....but if your Central goes out, your sunk until the repairman can get there!....at least having a spare will get you through until then....

1971 Maytags

I can guarantee you there are issues with a pair this old and that is the real reason they are getting new machines.

 

People don't live in a vacuum, these folks have used other peoples new or newer machines and they liked them better, I give them great credit if they have used this pair since 1992, they did their part to help preserve something older and now they have the decency to try to find a new home for these machines rather than just have them hauled away. [ they cleaned them up and they are only asking $100 for them ]

 

Even though everyone here recognizes the quality these Mts had in 1971 the reality today is any full sized pair today will work better than an old HOH dryer and a sluggish agitating A606, just as any midsized car today is better than a 1971 Ford Galaxy, for every day use.

Question:  This machine has Regular, Perm Press, and Soak cycles on the timer.  Water temp (Cold, Warm, Hot) and water level (Small, Medium, Normal, Large) buttons.  No Fabric Select buttons.  The Regular cycle has Delicates indicated below •2•4.  There is no separate Delicate cycle.  How is FabricMatic engaged?

It isn't fabric-matic.  You beat me to it Glenn.  It's just a single speed with perm press or regular cycles (with a delicate segment the last 4 minutes of the wash cycle--found on lower end maytags).  And the soak cycle.  You could use the soak cycle for the "wash" period for delicates.  Let it spin out as usual.  Then turn it to the deep rinse on Perm Press cycle for shorter rinse agitation and shorter spin.
