Hello vintage appliance fans. I am new to your forums, and quite glad that I've found you. I have been looking to purchase an old 1930's-era Maytag wringer washer for some time now, and have been regularly disappointed by all of the local offerings I've thus far come across: rusty, pitted, heaps of junk (always described as in "great condition"), and usually for a pretty penny, too, as their sellers think they're sitting on a gold mine. So, at this point, I am ready to bite the bullet and purchase one off the internet. I have recently tracked down a very nice Model 32 near Chicago, but the seller isn't particularly keen on having to ship it. He has agreed to do so, however, on the condition that I do all of the leg work in figuring out how to prepare it for shipment.

So my questions to the experts are:

-Approximately how much does one of these old aluminum tub wringer washers weigh, complete with electric motor? The seller casually estimated 175 lbs., because he couldn't get it onto a scale, and UPS subsequently quoted him freight costs in excess of $600 (!!). To me, 175 lbs. sounds a bit high, and if under 150, it can be shipped UPS ground for significant cost savings.

-If anyone here has had one of these shipped, have you used UPS, or have you gone with something like Greyhound Shipping, which I understand can be more reasonably priced for oversized items?

-Is it advisable to disassemble the washer (i.e., unbolt the legs, wringer, cross-brace, and motor) and ship those items in a separate box from the tub to make it all more manageable? If so, how difficult and time consuming would it be for the seller to disassemble it (it looks fairly basic to me based on what I've seen)?

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi

And welcome to the forum, I have a Maytag E2LP wringer and the wringer by it self weighs about 37 lbs and dose come off, so it can be boxed separately . I think you are probably right, in that I don't think it's 175 lbs in total?? But hang on someone will come along that will know for sure! Your in the right place !

Thanks for the response Stan, it is much appreciated. Hopefully others will chime in as well with some shipping experiences!

Have Shipped Previously

I've had several items shipped across the country - Dishwasher, Frig W & D, etc... Both times I've used U-ship and have had great results. They request the weight in the preliminary listing of the item, but I've guessed on weights for each shipment. You need to specify if the item being shipped will be on a pallet or not. Typically, large shippers won't be bothered if not on pallet, however there are smaller shippers, thru U-ship who can group other shipments from nearby areas on their route, and will usually bid a good price based on the bigger picture. Be prepared to wait - on bids, dates, etc... It's not a fast process. There are aspects that will require coordination - pick-up times, dates, loading help perhaps - but it's quite do-able. Good luck. If you want more specifics, please send me a message.
