Should I get this Calypso?

So I've noticed this Whirlpool Calypso set showing up on Craigslist in the next town over from me. Would this be worth having or would they be more trouble than they are worth? The seller is asking $700 for the set, which seems a bit steep, but maybe they can be negotiated with.

posting has been removed......price is a lot steep.....there were problem prone models, your best bet is to check the model number, the last digits should be KQ2.....this is the last generation with the bugs worked out, if it is a KQ0 or KQ1, I would say stay away, unless they can show proof that the upgrades were done!.....

I wouldn't give any more than 300.00 for a working set....and that may be a good idea, plug it in and make sure it works.....for the washer, during nutation(agitation) check for clunking noise from the pivoting mechanism, if there is, that may mean a major teardown to repair....

Yeah $700 for the pair is steep, but don't give up yet.    Just keep your eyes open, you'll find one for less.  

 

I have a Calypso and it's a fun machine to have around.   Lately I've been using it on the "Whitest Whites" cycle each week with non-HE Cheer and am happy with the performance.

 

The only "issue" I have is the touch control panel.   I occasionally have "a ghost" pressing the normal cycle "button" repeatedly during the cycle and after it's finished.   It won't start on it's own, but it is ready to.   I unplug the washer between uses and there's no problems otherwise.    I don't have any money into it (got it free) so I live with it's minor quirks.

I missed a platinum pair on local CraigsList yesterday.  Appeared to be in nice condition, but pictures can be misleading.  $425, seller claimed it's 4 years old.

The washer was very rough on clothing and not much good on removing dog or cat hair from fabrics, according to pet owners. If you are looking for an HE washer, choose a front loader.

this has to be one of the most gentlest machines out there for a HE TLer, if theres any kind of clothing damage or poor results, I would try looking in the mirror....as experiance has always shown us, it HAS to be the machine, operator error would never be the cause!

this is a fool proof machine.....no special loading, you can practically run every load on a Normal cycle, warm wash, cold rinse, and a clear rinse at that....you don't even have to use HE detergent......I have never had an issue yet
