Silex percolator

Hello friends! This is a picture of my latest eBay find. It got delivered today and I am really happy with it. The percolator works as it should and is in pristine condition. It does not look like it has ever been used and I can find no evidence of coffee stains anywhere. Would anyone here happen to know the age of this? I am guessing it could be from the 50s. This model does not have a removable bowl like the other Silex percolators I have, which are from the 60s and 70s. I have only seen this particular model on eBay one other time so I am thinking they may be somewhat rare.

Since the label says "Silex", and if it doesn't say "Proctor-Silex" anywhere on it, it would be from before the merger in 1960.

Thanks, Tom for the information. I had often wondered if at one time there had been a merger but just wasn't sure. It seems their products after the merger had become edgier, more modern, more convenient for the general public. A move that I suppose was necessary to change with the times. In any case, I love the technology of the time, both in the simplicity and the forward-thinking as to where the company was headed for the more modern times.

In any case, perked coffee tastes better, at least to me, and I look forward to having that first cup from the latest acquisition. Here's to hoping it won't disappoint.

Silex Review

Consumers Research Bulletin, which Robert made available for download for a small fee, tested percolators in the June 1959 issue. The Silex was in the “intermediate” category. It was very easy to clean but took 29 minutes to perk 9 cups of coffee, about 10 minutes longer than most other brands tested.

Incidentally, they found that Farberware, Sunbeam, Westinghouse, and Universal percolators failed electrical leakage tests and therefore were not acceptable. The highest-rated brands were Century, Dominion, GE, and Presto.
