So is there a difference between sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and sodium carbonate (washing soda)? I've both recommended for adding to laundry. And how does either work to make the cleaning process "better".

Wow, no "chemists" here who use or have used this and understand the difference and how they work? I'm surprised.

Try this link pretty good at explaining how Washing or baking soda works. We used baking soda in diaper pails to help with the odor. Used in washing the diapers and cloths. Got the spit up stains out without lots of bleach. We used clothslines to dry everything dryer to just fluff.
