Some vintage laundry hints from Ivory Snow & Monsanto made All detergent

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Monsanto was working on non-sudsing surfactants for dishwasher detergent and came up with what became ALL which was still too sudsy for dishwashers. My father was associated with Monsanto at the time and I remember the blue metal pail with yellow lettering in our basement near the then new Kenmore waterfall front washer. Laundry detergent was not part of Monsanto's mission so they sold their product to Lever.

Tom, what did your father do with Monsanto at that point? Was he in Dayton? My grandfather contracted with Monsanto in the 1945-1949 time frame (PhD chemical engineer) and worked on alkylated products (i.e. surfactants). He lived in Cincinnati (Glendale) and commuted to Dayton before moving up there for awhile.

ah good ol carbon tetrachloride. used for tons of things including dry cleaning, lava lamps, and fire extinguishers until we realized that not only does it cause cancer, it also turns into phosgene gas when you use it as a fire extinguisher!

needless to say, it's nasty stuff.

Tim, in addition to the boxes of regular All pictured in an old thread I posted at the link below, I have a box of Monsanto Fluffy All. But it seems too nice to open, wouldn't you say?

It's also in the back of my mind that I might get a frontloader someday, and this would be a vintage detergent that you could possibly use in a modern washer.
