A classic Sears Silvertone. The seller states that the picture tube is bad. Based on my experience, it's probably unlikely the picture tube is bad, but is probably a relative easy to fix defect on the high-voltage power supply. This system is not a seventies vintage but appears to date back into the sixties! When did Sears stop using the Silvertone nameplate?

I hope someone saves it and keeps it complete. People tend to "part out" these beautiful sets in order to drain more money out of the market. Thank goodness that is not the trend for our vintage washers, dryers, fridges, ranges, etc.

parting out machines

I know I certainly do strip machines and save only parts, and I thank God other folks do to. See, the thing is, most of all of my machines work, and that's because I have parts around - which are obviously stipped off of other sets.

Not every machine is worth saving. When they're water damaged, or mouse damaged, and you can possibly save another machine by stripping the bad one for parts, I think it's entirely appropriate.

How in the world are we gonna keep them running otherwise?

Also - take note that there is a huge differnce between a collector and an accumulator. A collector knows the pieces in his possession and chose them all carefully, whereas an accumulator has no idea what's in his possession because he has become encumbered by having too much stuff.

I make every effort to be only a collector, and not an accumulator. I prefer for my pieces to appear to be on display, rather than in the way of everything and impinging on the flow of the house.

Opinions vary. I'd have to say that the set shown above probably does have a bad picture tube, judging by the green tint all around the edge, and I think they are lying about it coming from a non-smoking home 'cause it looks like it has at least 35 years worth of nicotene plastered all over it.

I think that one's land fill.

Something that is unusable or damaged should be parted out, I have things that fit that description. My major complaint, is when someone takes a beautiful, fully functioning whatever, and strips it to make a killing. I never believed you shouldn't part out crap. Like if the Silvertone is unusable and beyond reasonable repair, yes, landfill or part out.

Don't let the green fool you, being a color set, some manufacturers played around with both gray and green varigated tints to the faceplates. A closer pic might also reveal faceplate delam, which is also common to this vintage and is a routine fix for collectors. Electronically, the CRT may be just fine.

Any guesses on the manufacturer?

Panasonic? RCA? Smoof, take your meds!

Most of Sears TVs of that era (other than some Japanese portable models) were made by Warwick Electronics.

Wards sets were mostly made by Wells-Gardner.
