I admit I'm a sub-par Jew, at least from the kosher perspective. I occasionally like to enjoy some Spam. Thus far, I tend to go for Spam Lite, but I recently discovered Spam with bacon, and it is growing on me. I know it isn't healthful, nor is it in any way sophisticated, but am I alone in the world?

What do you think of Spam? Please share recipes.

I might regret this one,
Dave

I like it, but

no more often than TWICE a year. Even the "lite" version is very salty.

Take it out of the can, chop it small, and add it to potatoes that one is already frying. If a person likes eggs (I hate, loathe, despise, detest, and abhor the things,) one might scramble an egg or two into the skillet when the potatoes are nearly done and the whole thing is hot throughout.

Eat on a warmed plate, with your cardiologist's number on speed-dial. Wash it down with a Cel-Ray or a glass of seltzer.

I certainly don't expect you to be glatt, but SPAM? (<correct case for the "meat" product.)

EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!

And thats the nicest way to put it

Well, I'm a vegetarian, but...

even if I don't eat the stuff, here's one my dad loves:

Slice SPAM about 1cm thick. Batter with fry-bread batter.

Deep fry.

He thinks it's heaven.

My mom says she's never closer to joining me in my dietary beliefs than when he's eating SPAM and, what's the other one? Oh, right, Underwood deviled ham...

SPAM is very popular in Hawaii. Why, I don't know. After all they have real wild pigs and luaus there.

I have tried, on numerous occasions, to get to like SPAM to eat it more than once very five years. I've tried frying it, chopping it, etc... and it's just not that appealing. And I like most pork products.

I do keep a few cans around for emergency rations though.

That's exactly the way my uncle used to eat it. I never tried it actually.

Don't worry so much about the diet; you are not alone.

I worked in a Jewish country club in my youth and the night that always was most popular was "surf-and-turf" night which included all manner of pork including bacon, shrimp, lobster and everything and anything else that was decidedly not Kosher.

The staff would trade country club stories ("war wounds")and it appears all country clubs are the same. The elite shall not be told (even by G-d herself) "Thou Shalt Not.."

*LOL*

Lawrence, I'm with you on eggs.

I'll eat a few hard-boiled one after Easter. Any other way and I can't stand even the smell of them. (It's the suplhur--before or AFTER eating them).

Why would I want to eat chicken menstruation, anyway?

(ducks and runs)

And before we say "EW", (even if it were like dog poo on a platter) when hunger befalls, one will eat may things not previously considered as good food.

There are entire recipes in my Ethnic group's repetoire that are based on lack of available ingredients. Most people; won't touch those foods today in that they trigger such strong war memories.

wrinkling up our noses

At many foods is truly a luxury.

We are not obligate anythings, except for milk. And look at the discussion that one is bound to let loose.

If you really want SPAM recipes, magazines from the period around 1943 on to the end (need I say what?) have tonnes of creative ideas.

SPAM-a-lope

For what it's worth..I actually have a book on the history of SPAM and it's really a good read...although I cook SPAM about twice a year..mostly in the winter I did have a better appreciation for it after I read the book...according to the book it helped the americans win WW2..when the GI's came home they demanded SPAM...it was supposed to be enough to feed a family of 4 with left overs for the bread winners lunch box the next day. My teenage son loves the SPAM and baked bean casserol with brown sugar and pineapple..I can go there about one time a year. Also once a year I slice up the SPAM-a-lope and cook it on the grill...strips dipped in hot mustard are pertty good. I saw a story on CNN a few weeks ago the SPAM plant was working double shifts becuase the demand of the stuff was up due to the bad economy.

Toggles is right!!!

Eggs have this goo thats running and sticky....and you think it the end of an EGG but it's really the beginning of a chicken....it's HEN C*M!.....and you say you don't swallow?

Tomatos are the same way....like it's not finished yet inside, it's in the larve stage, gooey and ready to SEED someone....like an alien
