Switching back to using powder

Well it's the new year and one of my new years resolutions is going old school again. I've had a good run with using liquid laundry detergent for a long time but the last few jugs I've used didn't turned out the way I was expecting. With some of my favorite ones now discontinued like Tide Mountain Spring, have a shorter shelf life, and struggles with keeping whites bright, it was just time to make a change. My favorite so far (at least for HE) is Kirkland, maybe not the best out there but it has always worked well for me. And I've been using Tide Original, apparently I really like this one. I think the one I've used before had Acti-Lift crystals which I remembered I didn't cared much about. The Clean Dissolve version has a similar scent of the liquid Mountain Spring which I loved and it's not as strong either. Once I finish up with this Tide, I'd like to try out some other ones they also offer so I can rotate around with Kirkland. Ultra OXI, Professional, and Downey for examples. In addition, I'm open to trying out other brands and kinds as well. Persil, Amway, or Uline for examples. Anything else I should look into or avoid? Oh and besides powder for laundry, I'm going to give Cascade powder a shot in my dishwasher to see how it turns out. I've never used powder before with the KitchenAid so I may like it or continue using pods and liquid.

I’ve been using Ariel 2 X Power powdered detergent for the last 6 months, $13.99 for the 211 oz /132 load bag and I LOVE it! I’d been using Ultra Tide liquid before for the past 4 years. The Ariel powder cleans so much better! And it’s more economical too. It’s especially effective in removing oil/grease stains and spots. And the scent is pleasant too.

I also use Ariel powder and it’s great. I use it in cold and hot water with excellent results. I also use Cascade or Premiere powder detergent in my modern Kitchenaid with great results too.

Persil Universal Powder and Color Powder are both excellent.

After trying Miele UltraWhite though that is my favorite for whites / lights. Super, super concentrated.

I've been a poweder detergent user for years. Since last September, I've been using Tide Professional. Before that, I was using regular Tide Powder and Tide w/Bleach Alternative. I also use Powdered STPP and Biz. I've been very pleased with the Processional.

Contemplating switching to powder myself after my current supply of pods are used up. I'd like to have more control of detergent use with the new front loader than I get with pods. Thinking of trying the Tide with Downy mentioned in a previous thread.

I'm planning on picking up some Tide powder if I every get out Target way. Been using Persil liquid for about a year time to change it up.

Just a warning....

Keep your cold temps above 80F when using Tide powder, it doesn't play nice and fully dissolve when it's cooler than that.

Surf is still in production but doesn't seem easy to find.  Marketed moreso for fragrance than cleaning ability.

Or just don't use cold water at all if you have a modern machine. Warm isn't going to be warm enough in all likelihood to damage fabrics anyway.

Mountain Spring Tide

I am not sure if this was discontinued. I see it fairly often. Walmart and Kroger generally have it.

My "warm" is 120F, it'll bleed the life out of dark and bright colors unless they're vintage with a warm wash tag on them.

I rarely use cold wash, the only times I would is whenever I'd wash out some vacuum outer bags with using Kirkland powder. Warm wash for darks and hot for whites.

My parents used to use Cheer but still kept some of the empty boxes around so that's what got me interested, my mom said Tide worked better when she switched over from Cheer. Definitely not into fragrance so I think Surf is out for me. Speaking of fragrance, is there any powder detergent left out there that is free & clear?

I've read that the liquid Tide Mountain Spring was discontinued a few months, I don't know if that also applies to the powder as well. I did bought a box once before and liked it but not as much as the liquid. I've also read that the liquid Mountain Spring was the "actual" Tide Original before they've changed it to Mountain Spring. And Tide w/ Downey powder is the "actual" Tide Original before they've changed it to Downey.

Another interest I have in mind for powder is Laundersol, don't know if it's worth it though cause of the high price.

Well it’s like my powder detergent never left, the only kind I ever use and lasts through enough loads that it’s the only detergent I’ll ever need…

Arm and hammer, Ariel, foca, Blanco, tide, all still have powder. Gain might still I don't buy it so haven't paid any attention.

Ariel with Downy...

Does a great job for me! As it is sold in a plastic bag, I have a Rubbermaid cereal container to dispense it. Here in Florida, any of the boxed powders I have used will absorb the humidity, and immediately clump, making it difficult to scoop. And I love the strong scent of Ariel, towels in particular smell great, none of that wet dog aroma emanating from liquids.

I wish my local grocery store iga provigo ect would bring back cheer powder detergent tide with bleach detergent add the all brand laundry detergent powder sunshine fresh liquid pods ect when i have to buy some feel like there not much choice in store unless buying online including this luiquid fabric sofner i bough some in 2019 in the us brough back in my luggage on the flight back home

@launderess- I didn't know they made an unscented version, I will check that out back home in Canada but also check the version here in Mexico while on holiday just now, I expect it will be scented.

What I have found out here is that still this year both Foca and Blanca de Nieves in Mexico still have phosphates-tripolyfosfato de sodio, I will be bringing some back home and expect/hope the scent to dissipate over time.

All the other detergents here that I have read ingredients listed do not have phosphates-although I have not checked every single powder detergent available-the detergent aisles plural here can be 40 to 50 feet long!

Not kidding and that is not including softeners nor the bar soap and detergents for hand scrub board laundry nor the stain pre-treaters. Spoiled for choice in Mexico.

I wouldn’t bother with Amway SA8 powder. It’s low sudsing, but even when paired with the brand’s all-fabric bleach/booster stain removal is not great.

I switched to powders when I purchased a Speed Queen front-loader in October of 2023
and get the best results with these:
Persil Bio (UK Unilever)
Persil Non-Bio (UK Unilever)
Tide Professional (Staples Office Supply online)
Omo Professional (Turkey)
TideMatic For Front-Loaders (India)

I like the scent and cleaning power of the blue Ariel powder (Mexico) available at Walmart, but it’s very sudsy in very soft water in the SQ. I had zero sudsing issues with it in a top-loading SQ.
