Tech: Maytag tub cover gasket

Does anyone have a good procedure for installing the tub cover so it does not leak? I bought a new gasket, but I'm unable to stop it from leaking when it spins.

Make sure the surfaces are clean, no rust or corrosion including the top lip of the outer tub. If there is rust on the outer tub lip clean it and use some sealer or silicone on it. Make sure screws in the band are not coroded. Be sure you have the gasket on straight. When you have the top and gasket in place be sure that the it is positioned so the inner tub doesn't rub and the top doesn't touch the cabinet top when it spins. Tighten the screws. That should do it. If not, sealer on all the surfaces may be necessary before installing. I don't like to do this because if you have to take it apart again it makes it a much harder job since you then have to scrape all the old sealer off.

Hi Ken,

What I usually do is make sure any loose rust or dried soap is removed from both the tub cover and the top rim of the tub.Maybe use a wire brush. Then I run a small bead of silicone on the top rim of the outer tub and spread it along the whole rim. Then carefully set the top cover with the triangular gasket already in place around the outside rim of the tub cover and position it down. Make sure the gasket rests on the siliconed top tub rim. I run my fingers around the whole rim to make sure the gasket is seated and let that set before attaching the tub clamp. Make sure the spacing of the tub cover is right so that it doesn't rub the top of the inner tub, and the raised portion of the tub cover is at the 12 o'clock position for proper off balance operation. This is one of the reasons I don't like to break open a tub seal on a Maytag.

I have been told by Maytag, and found it to be true, line up the tub top to the top panel of the washer before tightening the spanner nut on the spin basket. When I'm lining up the tub top, after making sure that the gasket, clamp(lube the bolts), tub top and top edge ot the outer tub are clean, I spray 409, Windex or something wet to allow the tub top to slide through the gasket and not make the gasket twist out of possition. Just leave the clamp slightly loose, lower the top panel, center the tub with the opening on the top, place the palm of your hands on the opening of the top panel, your fingers on the inside edge of the tub top and slowly pull the tub top until it is about 1/4" below the top panel. Then tighten the tub clamp, after making sure again that the gasket didn't twist, alternating back and forth on tightening the clamp screws. Then line up the spin basket and tub top by using your fingers to make sure the spacing is the same all the way around the top of the spin basket and under side of the tub top. Then tighten the spanner nut. I used to tighten the nut and then try to line up the tub top so that it wouldn't scrape, but doing the top first works better. When Maytag went to the plastic tub top, it may have save 15 min. of time on a job that involved removing the spin basket. Glen.

Nice and dry now.

The edge of the outer tub is rough and rusty. I cleaned it up, used a small bead of silicone and spread it with my finger. I used the windex as kreftgr said so the gasket would slide nicely when the clamp was tighened. I also went to the hardware store and got new stainless steel screws and nuts for the clamp.

Now it doesn't leak a drop.
