I upgraded from a queen bed to a king bed earlier this year, and I’m slowly building up my linen collection. I had two of these blankets in queen size for my old bed, so at the first hint to fall here in Texas, I decided I needed to go to Costco get a couple of these in king. The blankets are quite light - until they get wet. Then they are ridiculously heavy.

I put the first one in the washer and went on my way doing some chores around the house. I was ironing and did not notice my washer struggling to process this thing. I noticed the washer was off, so I assumed it had finished and I proceeded to transfer it to the dryer. I opened the door of the washer to find a wet blanket in a pool of water. There was an electrical smoke smell in the utility room, and the washer would not turn on at all. I unplugged it for several hours and plugged it back in and it still will not turn on. This happened once a couple of years ago when I tried to wash two of these blankets in the queen size together. Last time this happened I left the washer unplugged for several days and it finally came back on, so I’m hoping that my LG will come alive again this time. Though I must must admit, I like the idea of potentially having to buy a new machine. We’ll see what happens, but I’m on the hunt for new machines just in case.

I transferred the heavy, wet blanket to the Miele W1215 in the garage, and of course the Miele handled it like a champ. Those large tub LG’s aren’t built to handle heavy loads. The Miele seems to be, but I don’t think even the new Mieles are made like that anymore.

I’d love to buy a Miele Professional Octoplus Commercial washer and dryer, but that seems a little excessive. If I knew they would hold up like the old Miele’s, I would seriously consider it. We’ll see what happens! They have them for sale at Costco Canada, but that is quite a long way from Texas!

Spoken like a true member of this forum!  If you bought those commercial Mieles you might be denied that privilege for a long, long time!  Best go with something you can get at Sears or Home Depot.

I have a blanket like that, mine is white.

I'm shocked to know that your LG couldn't handle it... I've already washed mine in probably all of my 21 washers, except the Whirlpool countertop wringer and the Silk Lux because it wouldn't fit.

The best machine to wash it (in my case) is the Hotpoint portable because the agitation is very gentle and that workhorse can spin even with the worst sudslock happens, but I washed it a couple of days ago in the 24 inch whirlpool thin twin just to see how it would behave with a big load. It was perfect (but too aggressive "shredmore" agitation).

Even the WCI skinny mini handles it easily.

The only washer that struggles a little is the 1.6 cu ft Magic chef. It suds lock beautifully and I can hear it struggling until all that water finally drains.

Miele washing machines of old

Were built to near commercial quality standards, thus not surprised your 12XX series was able to handle that blanket with ease.

That being said one reason got the Maytag wringer was to wash bulky and heavy items instead of taxing the Miele or even AEG Lavamat.

My Miele is older than your 12XX and thus lacks sophiscated distribution and motor controls. It will attempt to balance a load but for so long; but when that action times out and timer says "lets rock", it's off to the races; banging, clanging and vibrating if needed. After spending >$300 for new suspension system, that on top of $$$ to have shocks replaced a few years before you can see why am not going down that rabbit hole again.

The Lavamat will handle a queen sized cotton or wool blanket, but takes ages. Also build quality isn't a patch on a Miele. When queried AEG tech support up north said he couldn't recommend doing heavy blankets in this washer.

If worse comes to the worse, have wash tubs and two hand cranked mangles. Then would take a cotton blanket off to laundromat and bake excess water out of fabric. *LOL*

You'd think that the machine would be able to handle that blanket, it being made of polyester. I would suggest that perhaps the LG was already on the way out, based on your previous experience.

Anyway, happy shopping for machine bargains.
