Twice the range of the EV1 (almost meeting the 300-mile range of my SAAB) and twice as fast!
It's using lithium ion batteries, where the EV1 used lead acid, and then nickel-metal hydrides.

But not Diesel?
VW was suppposed to come out with a Diesel-Electric hybrid to get 90mpg. As it is already, I can go from New Orleans to past Knoxville, TN in my Bug (600 mile range).
