As for a laser phono: Given how much money I over a lifetime had invested in my collection over 36-years, I think $15,000 for a record player that I can play just ANY records on, no matter how much bad shape the condition is in that would not sound good under an ordinary phonograph needle, maybe at this point, I would be way ahead...

I have mega turntables and related things in my garage. Records are another of the things I was into from infancy. Later when I was a teenager I discovered Jukeboxes!!!! That opened up a whole new can of worms.

SAVE THE NOISE!

To me, all old stuff is like a time machine. I want to experience what they experienced, back when it was the latest greatest.

I think it's fine to do the noise cancelling and so forth, but I think it's imperative to preserve the original, unaltered recording!

I love vintage electronics! I have always liked the way vintage cars, appliances, and electronics looked, never liked the way newer things looked at all. When I get my own house someday, it will be a 1960's/1970's time capsule, and everything will be vintage!

I still have the JCPenney MCS turntable from 1978.  Haven't used it in a while but it is connected and ready to go ... assuming the stylus and cartridge haven't gone bad.

Actually, there wasn't much surface noise on a newly pressed 78, especially those recorded after the late 30's, they just got scratchy sounding after being played a few times. This was especially true if the needle used was poor quality or worn out. Another thing is that some labels used better quality materials than others.

Another factor is that frequency response gradually improved over the years. Until the mid 20's, records were acoustically recorded. After that, various methods of electrical recording were used.

As for digital transfers, Sony Music has done an excellent job with the well known bands and their hits, such as Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. An example is in the link.

If you want---you could spend 100 gran on a TT--ClearAudio has it-weighs in at around 600Lbs-comes with a 20K cartridge.A rep from Clearaudio will deliver,install,and set it up for you and connect to your system.Just what I need for my wishbook Living Voice Palladium speakers-or wait-Wilson Audio WAMM speakers that are a mere $685K as opposed to 2 mil for the Palladiums.Glad their makers will deliver and install them for you,too!Will stick with my $400 Rega P3.The Hi-Fi folks are going to crazy for me!Don't nned those components when much less expensive ones will do!
