Hey gang... I came across this programme and thought this might be some interest for you guys to watch. Though I'm guessing some of you may have already seen this, but I thought I'd post it any ways :)

When Hoover needed to shift their washing machines and cleaners their marketing people came up with a sales promotion, buy a Hoover appliance and get two return free flights. The scheme marked a red letter day for the company, August 1 1992, as it was a runaway success with goods flying out of the shops. But Hoover was left to count the cost of the worst marketing promotion ever and there were dire results. When Hoover sneezed Merthyr caught cold, MP of the time Ted Rowlands said. This is a story of Hoover in Merthyr.

Hi Hassney.

Yep - seems that we have been spoilt for appliancy programmes recently.

The 'Red Letter Day' programme was a great view, as it want all about the Free Flights issue but also covered the history of the plant.
Had some very nice pieces of archive footage including the 5 millionth washing machine off the production line, in the form of a 3224 Keymatic...

downfall of Maytag

If I remember correctly this was owned by Maytag at this time and instead of the ad reading a certain price point it said any Hoover, it is my understanding that inexpensive irons and vacuum cleaners were flying off the shelves. It cost Maytag millions as the British goverment made them honor the ads. Thirty five pound Vacuum and you got a Two Hundred pound airline ticket. As you can see they needed help then.
