The Maytag is fixed....

Well, the parts came for the Maytag ensignia/performa washer and it wasn't very hard to fix, but the new motor didn't work right so I had to send it back and im using the original motor again, it gets warmer than it should but as long as it works its alright until it breaks....but of course there is another issue with the machine now.....when it starts spinning it makes a sound like its winding down or something until it gets up to full speed, pretty sure its not from the motor, so im thinking its the transmission but lets hope it keeps working for a while because I really don't have any money for a new transmission.....but if its not the transmission then what could the sound be?

Maytag LAT and winding down

My Matag LAT's make a sort of winding down, kind of noise that is hard to explain, but I think its normal as I have heard 3 of these make the noise.  Its almost a slight whistle but not really and the faster it spins the deeper the tone and quieter it gets until its no longer heard at full spin speed.

Not the same noise

Its not really a whistle, its like a winding down sound that gradually fades out like you said but since these machines are totally different mechanically I think it must be a different problem with mine....it seems to be lasting longer lately, like right before it reaches full speed it kinda fades out for a second then starts again making a deeper winding down sound until it fades out....lets hope its not going to be a issue though, I will post a video of the washer doing a cycle soon, then you should be able to hear the noise and see if its the same as what yours does...

Noisey Norge-Tag washer

It could be a pump bearing going bad, they were famous for this problem, take a screw driver and put the plastic handle to your ear and the metal shaft against the flange of the pump and see if the noise is coming from the pump.

It has a brand new pump

The pump was one of the parts that needed to be replaced, well actually the old one worked fine but it looked a little rusty so I just got a new one....the machine was built in 2005 so it had the newer style pump in it anyway, that was used in the last of the herrin machines, it was a newer improved pump made so that they wouldn't have any more issues with pump bearings...the sound isn't really noticeable either, only when the lid is open, some loads louder than others but still not very loud.

I don't think I would worry too much about the noise if it is not that bad.

 

IMEO they never fixed those water pumps for long term durability, we still see plenty of the last design pumps with failed bearings, it was just a bad design to use such a short shaft and one bearing. The only fairly durable pump EVER used in a Norge built AW was in the mid to late 1960s when it was a four port Bakelite construction with two bearings.

 

It is interesting how MT could build a washer with the most durable pump ever for so many years and a design like Norge just couldn't get it right from the very beginnings of their AWs.

The noise mine makes sounds like that but allot quieter, but it can't be the thrust bearing, seeing that I just replaced the thrust bearing on it because of a slow spin problem...which seems to be resolved

I was going to ask about the thrust bearing as the noise you're describing sure sounds like it. Did you get the thrust bearing kit that was upgraded to the kit that uses like 3 parts instead of a million?

I think it was the newest version of the thrust bearing.....

It seemed to only have about 5 parts from what I can remember, which models had more than that? the black thrust bearings? i know the thrust bearings are usually yellow but on my older style Crosley 20 pound capacity washer it had a black pulley/thrust bearing...

Once it breaks it depends when I will ever get help to replace it, im not very good remembering the order things were in when I have to put it back together, i would probably be able to do it by myself but I don't wanna mess anything up...I know someone who said he would help me do it but he lives out west and probably won't be back here until winter... With the money I just put in it for a new pump, snubber and thrust bearing I can't just throw all that away now so im going to have to fix it, I don't think I will ever let that machine go, working or not I always liked herrin machines for some reason...and lets just hope it doesn't break within the next six months because the only other machine I have is a tiny little Hoover lol
