The "Uh Oh" Lady

I don't know what got me thinking about her, but true to form, the worldwide web produced a discussion from a dozen years ago (see link) that contains quite a few posts about her.

 

As some participants stated, I don't think she was an I Love Lucy exclusive.  I recall hearing her on other sitcom laugh tracks.  Maybe they were also Desilu productions; maybe not.

 

It seems her identity remains a mystery, but I do agree that she came through loud and clear as if she was near a microphone.

 

Does anyone here know more about her?

When I was still doing hair a million years ago in Petaluma, Calif. , in about 1980 one of my coworkers had a customer that was a person that used to be in the audience of sitcoms in the 50’s and 60’s. I don’t know what her name was, but she had the most annoying laugh I ever heard, and it was just about constant, and could even be heard loud and clear over the din of a 12 operator beauty shop at full tilt on a Friday afternoon. I can visualize her and hear her distinctive laugh, almost like a rolling chirp, bird like, if that makes any sense. She was only in a few times, but was unforgettable. She may be the “Uh, Oh” lady being referred to here.

As I recall, the "uh-oh" was often followed by a throaty chuckle. I wouldn't call it birdlike chirping.

There's probably no connection, but the actress Barbara Pepper comes to mind. She was a hefty character actress who appeared on ILL and Perry Mason, among others. You may remember her from when Lucy is on the bus tour of the movie stars' homes, and keeps changing seats. Barbara Pepper is one of the people who sit down where Lucy has decided she wants to be. Lucy says: "I'm sorry, this seat is taken." Pepper dismissively responds: "It sure is, honey!"

I suppose I should have been more clear about how this women's laugh sounded. When I described it as being bird like or a rolling chirp, it was really more like a Myna bird, not a dainty sound, but raucous. She also looked a little like Jimmy Kimmel’s Aunt Chippy. If she is still alive she would now be at least in her early 90’s. And I do believe that she made mention of being in the audience of the “I Love Lucy” show as well as other sitcoms that were filmed before a live audience. She was very nice and like able, but boy after listening to it for a couple of hours while she got a permanent we had all heard enough of that laugh, it was overwhelming. But this was her money maker and she couldn’t help the sound of her laugh. I can’t recall her name for the life of me, but I know she wasn’t Barbara Pepper, who was about the same age as Lucille Ball. She was a lifelong friend of Lucy, who met her when they were “Ziegfeld Girls” in “George White’s Scandal’s” on Broadway in the early 30’s. Lucille Ball stepped in to help Barbara in her later years and frequently had her on the “ I Love Lucy” show.

Barbara Pepper played the slattern in “Our Daily Bread” , a great movie about the Depression, directed by King Vidor in 1934. If you like old movies its a must see.
