This Week: Whirlpool Jingles

Instead of a film this week, I've put together a few vintage 30 sec radio jingles for Whirlpool Corp, along with some period photos.

Thanks for posting Cory some fun Little jingles and couple. Great pictures, I loved where the gas central air conditioner goes across the screen when they say whirlpool makes more than washers.

When I was working at the whirlpool Maytag dealer back in the mid 70s I remember a lady that came in and said she wouldn’t buy anything whirlpool because her neighbor had a whirlpool gas central air conditioner, which was a constant problem, after just a few years whirlpool removed their name from it and started selling it under the serval name again because it was causing such a hit to their reputation for their other appliances.

Whirlpool Central heating and air-conditioning

Whirlpool did indeed build some great units from their Hiel Quaker Tempstar division out of Tennessee, my first central air conditioner lasted 42 years and was extremely economical and quiet, it was another great example of when you buy a high efficiency product it usually lasts longer, which is also true of many major appliances today.

Unfortunately, their gas central air-conditioning units were a whole Nother matter. I don’t think many of them even made it 10 years, they did make some improvements in them and started marketing them under the serval name to get the blame off whirlpool a little bit. They were very sheepish about saying they still had anything to even do with them. I don’t think whirlpool produced the gas chillers under their name for more than three or four years.

Here in the DC area. The gas company gave you free service for gas appliances, charging just for parts and even though more than 70% of homes here have gas heating and not 5% of the homes ever had gas central air-conditioning. Once the summer weather hit. The service guys were working 24 hours a day practically they couldn’t keep up trying to keep the gas air conditioners working, a friend and customer was a service man for the gas company. He would tell me some incredible stories.

That's really interesting about the Servel re-brand. I had heard of these growing up but never knew anyone that had one. Even in the era of cheap NG, I wonder what operating costs were like compared to a traditional unit.

Mother's W&D were WP which is where one caught that bug.

What sold me on Whirlpool was the cool line you could call any time of day. I needed to use it once and they were extremely helpful.
