First and foremost why his IPod machine is distorted being played thru the Motorola-he has it jacked into what must be the TT input.The amp is being overdriven-hence the distortion-if he keeps that up-he will blow the tweeters.The underside-component side of the amp looks pretty good for its age.Replacement of the caps couldn't hurt though.To confirm the above problem he should try to play a record after reconnecting the TT and still see if the unit has distortion.May have to replace the cartridge and stylus in the TT.And does the TT operate at the right speeds(strobe disc check)and does the changer mechanism work properly-if not -cleaning and lubing the changer mechanism would be on order.Hope this helps him.
