Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Fascinating!!

It sure does look like the Thor Automagic, but I don't know if those were marketed in the UK. It is possible, but this may have been a British manufacturer's design... I would love to know more about this one!!

It is an Automagic

Its amazing what stuff this Pathe site is throwing up.

In 1946 this machine would have been a VERY rare commodity in the UK, it was included in the Which 1960 Washing Machines report although and updated version was then available under the Parnall name. Keith has (or had) both the Automagic and the Parnall Spinwasher.

This was probably the last vision of the Thor name in the UK although I know it was revived in the mid 1980s for an Italian manufactured washer dryer in Eire. I had the same machine (this was after I had got rid of my Philips Varitronic washing machine & matching dryer) under the Philips name.

The Parnall version continued and was updated until around 1966/67. The last Parnall appliance in the UK was the 275 Tumble Dryer which had a very long life under the Creda name. I have seen Parnall appliances advertised in Australia, did they have Parnall washers as well?

Great little site. There was a clip were they made a childs washing machine that was scaled down from a full size washer and it works off the mains supply and to drain the machine of water the child opens the front of the machine were the live motor is working (can see jammed fingers lol) could you imagine the uproar now if they produced them that way for children now lol
Good to see though all the old clips and there was one were workers in a factory get their washing done and there are close ups of all the machines in action

Hi Guys...Great website, didn't know it exsisted, found various other clips that were also interesting.

Regarding the Thor Automagic & Parnall Spinwasher I still have these and work fine, I restored the Thor about 10years ago, but still on the hunt for the dishwashing attachment. I have a video of the Parnall Spinwasher - Semi Automatic full cycle, but need to get it converted from Analog video to a pc file..hopefully soon !!

Thanks for the direction on the clip.
Regards
Keith

Robbie, I wonder if the washing was also dried for the workers with the Bendix laundry?? would have been very heavy to carry all that wet washing home..!!
