Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

These Maytags had "Partial Load" White & Colored buttons. These washers only really had 2 water levels. They were very restrictive because you couldn't choose length of wash time and had no idea what portion of the cycle it was in. Partial load filled about 2/3's full;all other cycles were full water level.I think Maytag was after a true one button system. Also you could not directly cancel the cycle. You could stop mid cycle by lifting the lid, but in order to stop the machine you had to push "spin only" and let it complete the spin and then shut off. Also it had only 2 cycles: Normal and Permanent Press. The delicate & wool cycles were just a shortened wash time of the normal cycle with the slower speed.

Coldspot66's description of the Maytag in today's POD is right on the money. A friend of my mother's had a later version of it (model number A-906), she used to complain that it was "too automatic".

Hidden Button

IIRC there was a button on the under side of the control panel that you reached around and under the lip of the top on the back side to advance the timer. Glen.
