Trivia Question about Comet Cleanser

My Partner brought home a big can of Comet Cleanser today - its labeled with "Prestige Brands, Irvington, NY". I thought P & G owned Comet. Can anyone in laundryland speak to the provinance of the Comet brand?

P&G sold off the Comet brand along with Crisco back in the late 1990's or early 2000, IIRC.

Both were part of a shedding of "stagnant" brands, and got the heave. Same was what has been going on with Fresh Start, Biz Bleach, Fab detergent, et al.

Use With Care...

...If you're not familiar with Comet, it's one of the more abrasive brands of cleanser. You know all those dull 1950s sinks in old houses? Comet is what did that, almost every time.

Be careful if you have surfaces you want to keep shiny.

All the Comets cans I see say "Scratch Free" and seem to be. Evey now and then I find a can of my favorite Comet, Lemon Scent, but it's getting rare to find any around here.

I keep my "threesome" Comet, Bon Ami, and Barkeeper's Friend under the sink and use which ever fits the job. If either Bon Ami of Barkeeper's added bleach I'd be happy.

Comet can be abrasive, but it depends on how it's used. Stainless steel sinks come out beautiful with a good brushing with Comet w/chlorine bleach. Rarely does anything need more abrasive than that.

Comet brand bathroom cleaner is one of my faves, but rather pricey and sometimes too sudsy.

I heard that in real life,they were neighbers in BelAir,Calif.as well as the best of friends.

I also remember her as a nun on"The Trouble With Angels" with Hailey Mills and Rosalin? Russell.

. . . claim to fame does seem to be Comet but she did have some film roles when she was older. Probably the biggest movie she ever had a part in was the 1956 epic "Giant" with James Dean, Liz Taylor and Rock Hudson getting top billing. She played Rock & Liz's mousey "next door" neighbor who lived like a thousand or so acres away. Quite different from her perky Josephine persona.

I worked in a memorabilia shop in Hollywood briefly back in the late 70's. The proprietor there had a tiff with Ms. Withers over some sort of favor he had done for her, and he dissed her by playing doorbell ditch and leaving a can of Ajax on her porch.

Re: the real subject of this thread, I have avoided all powdered cleansers on my kitchen sink since it was new and after over 17 years there is very little in the way of dulling. For the tough jobs in other parts of the house the cleanser comes out but it's not always Comet.
