While I was waiting for the bus today, a city truck turned down my driveway loaded with washers, dryers, and stoves. It was bulk pickup day. One of the washers looked like either a Hotpoint or GE. If I was able to drive and had a small pickup I would drive around on bulk pick up day in search of washers and dryers. I almost thought of asking driver if I could look at them and maybe save something from the crusher, but the bus got there before he came back out.

The Gadget and I go "a-huntin'" just before bulk pick-up day in his area and surrounding towns.

We have scored some nice things, but not yet "the big-one".

Bulk-pick up

Wow, that brings back memories... When I was a brat the city where I grew up did this pick up twice a year. I remember dragging home more than a few vintage dishwashers, washers, and TV's only to have to escort them right back to the curb... Notable exceptions: my father let me keep a 1955 Spartan upright console TV and an early 60's McClary wringer washer that we wound up taking to our country place.
I can remember seeing Frigidaire Dish-Mobiles, countless Filter-Flo washers, and hundreds of round-top refrigerators...

There is a guy in my hometown of Matherville, IL that has a bunch of washers and dryers in his yard, that I want to go see once I find someone with a truck. According to a friend if he gets rid of anything, he will have to start mowing his lawn so maybe I can find something there that I can restore.

Here in Bettendorf we have bulk pickup every month on what ever day your recycling day is. Over on the Illinois side of the river in Rock Island County, they have bulk pick up day twice a year one in the spring in April and again in the fall.

It really sucks not being able to drive or know someone with a truck.
