Finally, the deal is complete...it was one helluva drive but they're home- a GE calrod cooktop with remote pushbutton controls, a built-in oven and a wall mount refrigerator!

Get a load of the remote control panel, the whole thing is chrome plated and the GE logo lights whenever a surface burner is on. We pulled these right out of the original kitchen earlier today and are in working order, sans the fridge.

...Posing with a turquoise Burroughs adding machine I picked up for nothing this week.

Now check this out- a pic of American Home magazine 1956. The arrow points to this same refrigerator (what we can't figure out is how such a heavy machine hangs on the wall!). The kitchen in the mag was designed by George Nelson for GE as one of their "dreamboat kitchens" as the mag calls it. I'll need to find the freon leak if I want it to ever function. Either way, a perfect match to my upright Hotpoint fridge.

Cory congrats. Too bad the dishwasher wasn't still there. I do believe Jetcone had the wall fridge when growing up. This had to be later than 1957, I don't believe turqoise arrived ont he scene until the 1957 but was definitely there for 1958 model years.

Cool Cory!

That is going to be awesome! Are you going to put in cabinets to match?
My advice on mounting that fridge is to rip the drywall off and to reframe to accomodate the weight. You'll have to rewire anyhow! Now, everyone will have to keep an eye out for your dishwasher! Congrads!!!!

LOVE TURQUOISE !!!

they look MINT !!, awesome, congrads :), another vote turquoise my favorite too .....

What a great color!

Turquoise, sea foam, 50's glorious green blue green! You're in heaven man! Can't wait to see the kitchen photos. Just do me one favor, check the wiring carefully om the cooktop. It's known to go bad after awhile. I have some owners literature on both units if you wish me to e-mail or send a photocopy of this info to you. Your cooktop should be the j-551 unit and the wall oven should be the j-501. Replacement calrod burner units are still available for both units. If that timer goes bad then try this guy: Amann Appliance in Ontario, Canada at (905)527-2008 or e-mail [email protected] You can e-mail me at [email protected] if you want that owner's info. Merry X-mas!!!!!!

Thanks Guys!

Hey, Appnut is right, that mag is '58...good catch!

And ultramatic, you made my day with the mention of the calrod units being available. The instruction book and installation papers were included and I believe you're right about the models. I figure new calrod burners and drip pans would make the cooktop absolutely brand new. No signs of discoloration or overheating on any of the wiring, and the pushbuttons still snap tight, which surprised me. No paint loss on any of the lettering either-

You guys are close with the kitchen remodel idea...actually, I'm planning a house from the ground up. James Bond meets Frank Lloyd Wright..meets Frigidaire! Jet set modern all the way! I'd really like a turquoise 40" range, something from Frig or a GE Stratoliner or Liberator from the late 50's with the angular lines. At this stage I'm still planning, gathering, and building around the components. A dishwasher would be tops!

Of the group, the fridge will need the most work. The metal is a little soft on the bottom where I surmise water collected at one point, and it needs freon work, but every little door and drawer is there. No dents, no enamel chips. If nothing else, I think it would be great as an under-counter beverage fridge with extra freezer space for the Hotpoint upright. Kitchen cabinets are still undecided, though I'm leaning towards a black/red/turquoise theme for counters, cab's and apps. I know, kinda clashy right? : )

Good find there! And good luck with the remodel. Only thing is, I think if you put red in the same room as turquoise, the whole place will seem to vibrate like one of those optical illusions. Not exactly a peaceful or comforting feeling. I'd go with the turquoise cabinets, and suggeset white countertops and surfaces, and maybe light blue floor tile with black accents.

My tendency is to think of a kitchen as light yellow with white appliances; turquoise for the laundry room; and shades of blue in the bathroom. A light wood paneling (the real stuff, not psuedo) in the living room, with hardwood floors. I would save red for "emergency" colors, i.e. the fire extinguishers and similar infrastructure, so they stand out and are easy to find in a pinch. Or am I being silly?:-)

Was someone in this string looking for a GE Stratoliner? I think I read that, but now I can't find the email. I didn't respond cause I didn't have the picture, it's attached now.
