well ya know when you have a match set you would rather die than junk one? well i love this tag set and part of the reason is im gonna say we were born the same year or close to it but they are just so pretty.. anyway the dryer is a dream never a problem but this washer has been a thorn im my side since day one.. when i got the machine a good 7 years ago the tub nut was broken and the agi was stuck.. so i broke the agi apart to get the tub out well in doing so i messed up something in the trans causing a no spin.. so i got a used trans put that in and all was fine.. then the cluch started sticking it either would spin or would not spin so i got a clutch..then it was fine again.. then it started to leak oil (just a little) so apart again it came too put a seal in.. all was fine again.. so in fall i used it and it started knocking and sort of sticking at the end of each stroke of the agi so i parked it.. then last month i look in the garage and there is a huge pool of oil under the machine so just for kicks i plug it in and the trans is half way locked.. so at this point im done.. i love the look of that machine but to be honest i dont like the small tub and sort of crappy turn over so i thought what can i do now cause at this point the machine is trash.. now i do have a big tub early 80s flat trans machine just sitting in the garage that i got for free from this really nice old gal in her early 90s (so you know it never got much use), well i decided to just switch the outer skins and have a pretty retro look with a newer bigger working machine.. so thats what i did.. i know its not really the correct way to fix the old machine but what the hell.

the new guts in the old body.. the newer machine was a single speed and the old machine was a 2 speed with a tiny motor so had to find a bigger 2 speed motor and sweet steve r out in roanoke saved the day... yeah so now she runs again and nice and quiet as she should be ahhhh

all in all this may not have been the best or correct way to fix the old girl up but im good with it. like the retro look and can now actually wash a real load of cloths.

MT A702 Big Tub Converison

Glad you got it working Chris, I sent you a motor two days ago so now you will have a spare. I should have asked why you needed the motor because if the motor was still good in the 1962 it is probably a better motor and they are the same HP as the motor that was in your 1980s machine that you installed in the A702 cabinet.  One thing to be careful about if you did get a motor from a 2000s machine after they changed to a 1/2 HP motor is that you may ruin the timer or water level switch from the A702 as these parts were rated for the lower amp draw of the 1/3 HP motor that both machines should have.

Thanks John for the info on motor hp's. I will have to remember that! Any advice for possibly strengthening said controls to handle the extra power?

Sometimes you get a machine

that just doesn't want to live and you did the best with that. I have a 1970 LK Combo which John and I have been trying to resuscitate for 25 years! I hauled it off a junk pile because I had never seen a Kenmore front loader. It wasn't until I got it home I saw it was a combo. We are determined to breath life back into it.

Then sometime you get machines that are aching to be back in service.

Nice job you'll enjoy it now for many moons to come.

Hey - I like your thinking Chris! I did the same thing a few years ago to create the 'Super Tag' and used an A806 from '71 or so and put it in an A700 cabinet.

The only thing to watch for is the out of balance lever. It is not long enough to reach the tab on the tub top. I haven't put a lot of thought as to how to make it longer but eventually I'll get around to it.

You could always run a longer hose over to the bleach inlet on the tub.

Small tubs. I remeber the first Norge I opened up as a kid. The tub seemed almost tiny and the huge 4 blade agitator and plate filled up the bottom of the tub. And now we see bigger tubs would have fit all along in many machines. A 12 pound Frigidiare tubs easily fit the Unimatic frame, etc. I wonder why they made them so small when the conventionals (wringers) were bigger and standard. What made them all go small?
