Quick! A Crucifix and Some Garlic!

You do not want one of those drop-ins.

The reason is that their top has a lip that extends over the surface of the countertop. The reason that's a problem is: If that countertop is not dead level, there is no way your cooktop will be level, since it effectively rests on the countertop.

I've had two ranges (of different brands) with this design over the years, and neither was satisfactory, because of this problem. When I want to scramble some eggs, I want butter melted all the way across the pan, not puddled up against one side of it.

If you can get your countertop level, more power to you. But correcting an out-of-level countertop can take a lot of very patient effort. Even if the counter is level, this design really works only with a self-edged laminate countertop or a solid-surface counter; it does not work well with post-formed laminate counters or counters with a metal edge. The bump in the edge of the latter two countertop types means you either have to do some fancy cutting away of the postformed edge (as has been done for the range in the photo) or the metal counter edge.
