Hmm where to begin......Right

DAZ
Basically a "whites" powder because it has bleaching agents in it, i have used it for years with no problems.

New DAZ
smaller packet claims to be more concentrated, so you use less..........hmm the amounts you use for heavy soiling are the same as the old DAZ amounts (195ml)
Dislikes
Very sudsy doesnt rinse out as quickly as old DAZ

Also doesnt clean aswell now, stains like tomato sauce etc not completely removed on 60 degree cotton wash, old DAZ always removed these.

If you use the maximum recommended amount (195 ml) for heavy soiling suds are even worse
Result not impressed, wont buy again

And much the same goes for new Aerial colour powder again very sudsy and takes a lot to rinse out..........though does clean well on 40 degree cotton wash
Old Aerail was a bit sudsy but cleaned just aswell and again it the same with amounts to use if the clothes are heavily soiled, i find this odd as these new type powders are supposed to be more concentrated, the prices are cetainly up on the previous powders

What is going on?

I've noticed that with Daz too... didn't remove any stains at all. Coincidentally, I stopped using the new Ariel colour powder as it left stuff smelling musty - as do the new tablets, never had problems before.

At the moment I'm using store's own brand stuff, and to be honest have to say that they do a good job that I'm not so sure I'm going to switch back to higher priced alternatives soon if store's own tablets can do just as good a job.

Not just that but all store brands - be it Asda, Sainsburys, Morrison or Tesco, rinse out perfectly and don't suds anywhere near as much as P&G varieties. I think the only cleaner rinsing stuff is Persil non bio.

Store Brands

Hello Jon

Thanks for your comments.

Yes i have found the same to be true of Waitrose Colour Powder and Co-op Powders much less suds and they clean aswell without those heavy smells

I wonder why all this is going on

Gary

Probably a plot to get us to use more soap powder... concentrate the powder, but we still have to use more to get stuff clean. But if there's less in a box because its more concentrated, tha tmeans we'll have to buy more...

Not just that but I find it sneaky how it now costs almost £7 for a 28 wash box of powder, where 45 washes of the same brands cost no more than £4 5 years ago.

I definitely have to big up own brand stuff though. Currently using Tesco tablets, and have been using Sainsburys and Morrisons stuff, and the performance has been stellar even on a short wash. And with all the baby laundry we have at the moment, detergents sure get some testing!

Jon

Hi All.
I use Ariel colour liquid and Tesco's colour liquid ,which is almost identical in performance and fragrance.
I have found Surf to be poor in cleaning ability and its "fragrance "- Lemon & Bergamot insignificant .
I bought a big box of the stuff so I now use it to soak floor cloths before washing them.
What good it will do !
A couple of years ago ,Sainsburys used to sell a Bio powder
( made in Germany I believe) with blue pearls. It was fantastic !
But they have stopped selling that one now.
I so miss Drive and Ariel from the mid 70's.
Oh and 70's Comfort FC. I can still smell it now !
Loved that fragrance.

Kindest regards.
Louis.

Powders

Thankyou everyone for joining in with this thread

YEs i totally agree about pricing.........all this shite about 25, 45...whatever washes is bol..x.....if these powders as in my experience do not clean aswell as the previous one did then they are a total waist of money.

I used to use persil/colour powder until about a year ago when they changed it..........

Pricing, yeah i remember you could buy a litre of Fairy washing up liquid about a year ago for about £1.75 and then they bought out these new sizes .5/.65 ltr what for??????

I dunno, Louis yes 70s/80s ariel was great!........I remember drive aswell LOL...........infact i think most old powders worked.........but now you have to buy extra boosters to use with the already expensive weak market leader powders.

Gah.......find me a wharehouse full of old powders.......

Again Thanks every one who has contributed to this thread

Gary

Hi Gary.

Yes indeed !
I forgot about the "boosters"
I do use Bio-tex myself and its ok...ish..
Bought a couple of boxes of borax and now I'm experimenting with them ! Lol...

In the 80's we had a weekend break at my ex's parents caravan in St .Annes.
There was a tin in the unit under the sink full of blue powder.
I (stupidly) stuck my nose in the tin and took a good hard sniff. Its was the old blue Surf powder and I inhaled almost half of it .
It nearly blew my eyeballs out of their sockets !
I was never the same after that... Never !
Regards.
Louis...

Dating yourself...

...I remember when Bold powder used to be blue (until very recently), but I never remember Surf being blue! Lol

Just got a wash on the clothes horse now, done in Tesco tablets... everythings as clean as can be and smells lovely of (cheap) fabric softener.

That's another thing - I'm having to use cheap softener nowadays as it's the only softeners that seem to haev any proper sort of fabric conditioner smell to them at all...

Jon

smells

argh dont get me started on the over powering pefumes added to powders and conditioners

My old time favourite was softlan, very fresh salty sort of smell.

Like you jon i find the cheaper conditioners, (co-op blue one) are ok for smell

Lois
fancy taking a huge wiff, i could understand it if the box said "personal room odouriser" or "jungle juice" on it :-)...........but yeah if you get a lung full of washing powder it certainly triggers sneezing and watery eyes :-)

Gary

Dating myself !!! Yeah .. Im 46 yrs old ..............

Hi Jon.
Surf had a blue and a white powder choice back in the 70's.
It was good stuff back then ! ( not for directly inhaling though !)
The old Bold back in the mid 70's -1990 was one of my favs ...

Hi Gary.
I was curious as to what was in the tin !!!!hahaa!
Also remembering Softlan ...
But salty ? Like the sea air perhaps ?
I am using Green Force F.C at the moment..
Its good and has a gentle clean smell.
Kindest regards.
Louis.

Daz

Ive been using Daz for a few weeks....since they had 80wash boxes for £8 at sainsburys. I really like it, not as sudsy as other P&G powders, gets stuff clean and I really like the smell...a proper detergent smell. I tried surf and have tried some supermarket own brands but found they made clothes "bobbly".

Mind you, I haven't tried Daz on excessivley dirty or stained laundry.

Washing Powders

Hi Guys.

I remember when Ariel Automatic first came out and it was a really nice sweet smell. My Mum use to use lenor as well, but once the clothes had dried, they had a weird smell.

I also remember Bold back in the late 1970s early 1980s, it was such a nice perfume smell.

Old Washing Powders

Does anyone remember Radion washing powder & Radient, which was used for twin tubs.

Also, I rememebr boots selling Cool-Forch washing liqued, and was able to use lower temps with it.

Surf Automatic had 2 types, one was white, and the other was blue, as it had a blue whitener, made clothes look grey looking. The surf white really did smell so nice.

I remember when my Mum had a twin tub, she use to use Persil twin tub powder, and the water was milky with pure soap. Also, Fairysnow had a twin tub powder with built in fabric softner.

Think I will stop now cause I am showing my age, lol.

Hi All.
Hi Paulinroyton.
I do remember Radiant and Radion.
Fairy Snow ( with fab con ) also.
I also recall having bought Wisk ( liquid) in the early 90's.came in a red plastic bottle.
I have never tried any continental detergents sold in supermarkets -Netto /Lidl..( I do go there sometimes )
Has anyone tried them out ?
Regards.
Louis.

I tried one of Lidls when I lived in the UK...it was fine and certainly rinsed well....

I am not sure about Aldi detergents in the UK, but here they Trimat rates at the top with Levers Drive and Omo/Omomatic....

I tried Lidl's Formil - at first results were impressive, however after a few washes with the powder at least, whites were dingy and grey, and coloureds smelt musty. Not just that but the powder smelt like sawdust! However they've recently reformulated, and at a fiver for 60 washes probably would be worth a try again. Not so much as a gamble as paying twice as much for a similar amount as you can do with other brands.

Radion... that is probably my favourite washing powder, reminds me of my Grandma and Great Grandma for they used to use it all the time. Loved the huge bright orange packs and it smelt gorgeous - in fact, I'm sure Surf Sunshine had the same smell as Radion until they introduced this essential oils nonsense!

Lidl colour powder

I Tried it but it didnt clean that well and yes it had a strange sort of damp smell, worst though was i was getting a rash in a secret place :-).........so i dumped it.

All my work clothes get filthy and i need powders that work (forget eco powders great if your clothes arent dirty)......

and really my favourite was the old Persil colour.......at present im using Waitrose colour powder and that seems very good

pity about the new Persil but there yah go

Compact Washing Powders

Hi Guys.

Something else I have thought of. Does anyone remember the compact powders by Procter & Gamble, Daz, Bold.

You would put a scoop into a net/container, and place it into the drum.

Regards

Paul

Lidl's 'Formil'

I tried it - smelled quite reasonable, but it didn't rinse cleanly out of the laundry. Mum and sister experienced the same thing. So, back to Daz it was.

I kept the Lidl detergent box and decanted Daz into it - P&G cardboard boxes are bloody rubbish.
