Very low end HP and GE models could have dials. GE put an evenizer over the first Calrod bake elements, but it was a disaster. First, the bake element was wavy from back to front so there was a lot more mass than the more modern design. Second, the evenizer over it held too much heat between cycling on and off. They tended to overbrown on the bottom of baked goods. I have a 24" 1954 that originally had an evenizer, but the bake element was replaced.

 

I wonder if the red GE emblem was the oven signal light.
 
I agree with Lawrence; that looks much more like a Hotpoint to me than a GE. They did, after all, hold the first patent on the Calrod unit. Maybe this is just an early example of the re-badge jobs that were to come. Also, is this a Canadian model?
