We received Sunday's St. Louis Post Dispatch this morning. Inside, I think it was this paper, was the weekend issue of LIFE dated September 16th. On pages 16 & 17 of the issue was a spread on the Vacuum Cleaner Collectors Club Convention held in a Sheraton Hotel in Los Angeles this summer. Did anybody here attend? They actually have people who modify vacuums with special motors, filters and contraband beater brushes to create the ultimate cleaning machine. I guess if someone arrived at the contest with a machine sporting a 220 volt cord, it would be over. There were 5 photos. The article starts: "There was no cause for alarm when a giant, constant sucking sound was heard coming from a Sheraton hotel in Los Angeles this summer." hmmm

On a related note, Fred S. and I attended a taping of "The Price is Right" while in LA.
The episode airs tomorrow, look for us in the audience, about 5 rows back from center and to the right.

Poor Jeff & Fred, From saving one vacuum cleaner to the giant constant sucking sound to the sinful capital of the entertainment world to having your faces on television screens all over creation. I just don't know. This is a lot to take in about two of our own. At least be sure to get yourselves copies of the magazine. In years to come, when we have a proper theocratic government in this land, there will not be any magazine articles that start off with words like this one nor will men be allowed to have unnatural interests in things like appliances, let alone have them celebrated.

The 2nd coolest thing was finding the house used for the exteriors of "The Brady Bunch"
talk about being on holy ground!
 
I was at thelast convention. I am in the background of one of the pictures, sitting at a table. My Clarke 500 is also in 2 of the pictures. It was a lot of fun. And there were some very interesting vacuums. I was kind of sad that they didn't show Alex Taber's collection of very very old vacuums. He even had the first vacuum, the Whirlwind there. At the 2004 convention in Chicago (when we got to see Jeff Parker's Hooverland, and Fred Nelson's collection) we did have a 220V cord. It was mainly for Tom Gasko's European Dysons, but in the competition, someone plugged a old Kirby into it. Amazingly, the motor wasn't ruind, or it still ran after that.
 
120V vacuums on 220V-?Happened at a radio station I used to work at-was at the transmitter site-We got a new FM transmitter system-and a dummy load to test them on-I asked another engineer there to wire a 208V outlet to plug the dummy load into-its blower required 208-220V to run.Anyway-he wired the outlet as I asked-but ALL of the outlets behind the transmitters were 208V instead of 120V.(building was wired with a 208V 3Ph system)You get 120V from on phase to neutral or ground.It was Aux transmitter maintenance day-was vacuuming it out with a Sears kenmore canister-Was early in the morning beforew AM transmitter sign-on-low and behold-that vac sure PERFORMED-and ran for a while before it dawned on me about the voltage-checked the outlets with a voltmeter-was 208V-that Ken vac ran off 208V for what must of been about half hour.Didn't hurt it at all.Had the engineer recheck his wiring-He rewired the outlets and were OK.The dummy load got its 208V.All of the transmitters there ran off 208V 3 ph.

From Television City in Hollywood....

The TPIR taping was an all day adventure that began with us waking up at 4am so we could get over to CBS and get in line, and ended about 5:30pm that afternoon when the taping was finally done. Inbetween was LOTS of waiting in lines, but it was worth every minute to sit in that audience and participate in a TV institution.
Fred and I were on the phone for the first few minutes of the show this morning, I've heard we got lots of camera time, but have to wait till I get home tonight to watch the tape.
I can hardly wait!!!
 
Jeff, I am so glad that you and Fred got the chance to do this. As the show progressed I saw both of you several times but never for more that a couple seconds. Great fun!! Terry
 
I'll never forget it!

It took up a whole day, but when we walked out of the Bob Barker Studio after it was all done we were both on a "high"
It was great fun to be a part of it, and watch all the behind the scenes stuff happening.
Bittersweet too, as the whole trip was a blast, hard to believe that 3 months have passed already!

yes the Brady's had a Hoover

They had a model 1020 Convertible in fact.
The real house is a treat to see, and so much smaller in person than it looked on TV! According to Brady legend, all the exterior shots used were filmed during the series first season, then re-cycled for the balance of the run. For more info on this very famous house, do a google search on "brady bunch house"

Wasnt there a gas grill built into a brick wall next to the wall oven?

IIRC, Bewtiched had one too next to the flair. What WAS the name-brand on these gas grills?
