I was just looking at that Electro Hygiene I bought and was wondering what this red thing is where the hose attachs. It looks like maybe there's a piece missing, the ring has a small hopper like opening with holes. I'm guessing you would put something with a scent in there which would be sucked into the vacuum and freshen the air. Anyone care to guess, is there a piece missing?

Probably Pete...

The TOL Royal Everlast uprights have a similar arrangement for an air freshener, and there is a little sliding cap that goes over the chamber to let air flow thru the scent beads.
The Rpyal beads are some of the freshest smelling stuff I have encountered!

Many electrolux vacuums have had a setup on them where it would measure the amount of suction passing through the hose. When it would drop below a certain amount, the door on the front of the vacuum would open and pop the (Full) bag out. My mom's electrolux had a dial that you could adjust the sensitivity of the bag sensor with depending on what type of dirt you were sucking up. With the sensor on 1, it was set for large dirt particles. Thinking that you would need lots of suction for large particles, the bag sensor was rather sensitive at this setting. At 6, the sensor was the least sensitive, and the bag sensor would pop open only if the thing was completely clogged.

I am thinking maybe this piece could be some type of adjustable bag thing like the Electrolux vacuums had.

I am also wondering if besides using the vents behind the hose connector for fresheners-if when the vac is set up as a blower-the same ports could serve as a demother. You would put moth crystals in the chamber-and blow the demother gas generated from the crystals into a clothes closet or garment bag.Just a thought-I am going on that your Electro-Hygiene has a connector on the back of the canister-blower port-where you could connect the hose and use the vac as a blower.Royal machines have such a port.I don't think moth crystals are available anymore-becuase its thought the gas they generate is now too harmful for us humans.Remember their distinctive smell as a kid.My mom packed her sweaters and our wool blankets in a container with the moth crystals. You would have to air them before using them.

mothball availability

"I don't think moth crystals are available anymore"

Actually, those cake deodorizers one sees in urinals or hanging over toilet rims are the same thing, paradichlorobenzine.
