So Spring break is finally here and I am beginning to start to turn my outside shed into a vintage kitchen. I collected all the vintage pieces in 2011 and finally got money together to get the building started. My goal is to finish by August 1st which would have been my Dad's 89th birthday. I chose that date because he was an Army veteran of 3 wars (WW II, Korea & Viet Nam) and spent his career in food service. Today is empty and deconstruction day. I need to replace the side with a bigger window and put in a new subfloor/floor. I've started with a few pics of what I'm dealing with and will add as things change so I will let you know how it's going. Here's a list of what is going into the kitchen:

1961-62 40" Frigidaire Flair Stove

1964 Frigidaire Spin Tube Dishwasher -Turquoise

1952 Frigidaire Refrigerator

1978-79 GE Filter Flo Washer

1909 American Standard Double Drainboard Sink - High apron back and legs.

The dishwasher need some work and I'll be documenting that as well to share with the group. The stove needs a few part like drip pans, supports for the burners, etc. but nothing major. Refrigerator needs a paint job. The washer is perfect - (Much thanks to Martin/Yogitunes)

Wish me luck.

P.S. I need to resize the pics but I was in a hurry.

Cool....we love to see vintage rooms in the making....

how big is the total area?.....give a drawing of where items are to be placed....of your list, is all that what will fit into the space, or will there be space available for future items?

knowing Joe, the hideaway is still there, behind the faux wall.....he couldn't get rid of all his other toys...watch that sling convert to a pot rack....(ducking and running)....lol

Details

The building is 12' x 20' so 240 sq ft. I don't have a drawing I can upload. I kept looking for a website that would let me draw blueprints but never found one. I spent 6 hours on it today and got quite a lot accomplished so more pics on Sunday.

Yogi  did you have to let out the cat out of the bag! Eye bolts are for the pot rack  *wink, wink*

Day 6

Ok so here's what I've done so far.

1. Built and installed 2 windows - all free materials I found or people gave me.

2. Ripped up the floor. It had been a slat floor where you could see the dirt through the floor. Turned out a good thing I had decided to get rid of it because is was dry rotted. I figured that I could recycle it but it is too far gone to use.

3. Installed a new subfloor (with the help of my friend who came from Iowa to help me this week)

I know everyone wants to see the fun stuff but I have insulation, electrical, plumbing, and cabinets to go. Funds are limited so it will be slow going as I can. (unless I sell a lot of jamman_98 2013 calendars)

So Friday it's time to install the new floor. I found a floor I liked. Not sure how much more I will accomplish. This was a big week. Weekends will be filled with working on this as I can. Scottish games are this Saturday so Kilt watching will be the activity.

As for you Yogi! Watch the leg remarks or no 2014 calendar for you!

Cool Beans....your getting there.....I know its a slow process.....

you are leaving space for a dryer, yes?

I almost want to come down for a weekend to help!....gee, is there such a thing as a pre-wash-in, or a downright construction party....electrical, plumbing, drywall, and paint....nothing I haven't done before

Joe what you need is a few handymen!....to pile in 30 or 40 guys, I mean pile on, wrong again, I mean to pile thru the work......none of that sounds right....you get my drift.....wonder how fast it could be knocked out?

how many guys can fit in that room?.....counting the ones hanging from the ceiling?...

Hey

Gary - I didn't get your email :-(

Yogi - No room for a dryer :-(

Electrical is next then plumbing. I'm not doing drywall because I hate to put it up so I'm doing beadboard walls instead. Would love the help but I have to do a little at a time - funds ya know.

HI Joe

Hi there kid, Beadboard is a great look. My kitchen from 1897 has beadboard up to a chair rail height and then plaster above. I wish that I was closer, I would help you with your project. I used the email address you have in your profile. I guess it didn't get through?. Have fun, Gary

Problem

So today the electrician came to give me an estimate on the rough electrical wiring that I needed for the kitchen project. I didn't mind the estimate of $800 for the shed but I was not prepared for the bad news. My house service needs to be upgraded before I can hook up the shed. That will cost $4700 and that will have to happen before the shed project. Oh the joys of a 50 year old house.

. I don't have the money to do it but I'm sure an answer will come to me. I may have to refinance the house to finish everything but don't want more debt. I can still do a few things to the shed with what I have left so My August deadline is busted for now.

HI Joe

Hi there, Sorry to hear about the electrical problem with the new project. I have had to upgrade my service too, but then my brother is an electrician so he did it for just the cost of the materials.
I like Pampered Chef a lot. Have fun, Gary

Things always turn up when doing construction of some sort Joe....

this can depend....how much can you do yourself?.....and can you find someone who will do the harder stuff as a side job, just as long as you have permits and inspected, it can be done a lot cheaper...

I did all mine, permits first, and then the inspector came along and offered a few things he wanted done, and got approval!.....

not all things have to be done by a licensed contractor....things vary from place to place....but as long as they can inspect the work before walls and such are put up, usually there is no issue......

then again, my nephew was running underground cable to the pool, inside plastic conduit, 5 feet from the house, and his inspector was a D**K!....which I had no problem telling him that to his face....he was just being an ASS, over a tiny ground screw attached to the pool, which was supplied by the pool company who installed it!....

hang in there, you get there....little by little....

Thanks

The electrician said he would work with me on the shed but the house is more than I can tackle. I'll find a solution.  I'm thinking about refinancing the home and using the equity to do the electrical and some other improvements to the house. I"M just dissapointed right now.
