Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I wonder if the dial *cough* pardon me, I mean "Clothes Conditioning Command Center,"  is back-lit on that one.  The panel's basic design is similar to the '58 I found (also on the peninsula) that ended up with Roger in Tucson, but I'd peg the subject machine at no older than 1960.

Zowie!

Stan,

Thank you so much for posting this! This Craigslist Ad confirms what some of the TOL 1961 dryers, uh, I mean, Clothes Conditioners looked like. I've never seen ONE of these in person. This model is the match for the 1961 Filter-Flo washer Mark/Lighted Controls in VA had or has:

OK, so you guys get the LONG version:

What's unique about these two is that GE must have had surplus Gold paint from the 1960 "Golden Anniversary Line" and did what they usually did by producing the next year's model a little ahead of schedule, maybe before they had decided on the new year's color scheme and created these. This washer is essentially the follow-up to the WA-850T that resides in John Charles' basement (which SHOULD have been painted gold, but it, too was a premie). GE usually had "versions" of the same model in the same model year as they made up their minds and as they "improved" the product. If I were a gambling man, I'd bet the rating plate on this dryer would read something like DA-820V  V 1 with some other digits. I'm going to have to try to get this dryer (the last thing I need in my basement). The other reason I know this is a "V" and not a "T" model is the cabinet top has two square embossed "rises" right underneath each pedestal. Up until 1960 the "rise" was just one straight bar across the back of the cabinet underneath both pedestals.

What interests me most about this dryer and what's great about the pictures you posted is one of them confirms the fact that for some reason, in 1961 only, GE decided to offer on their TOL dryers alone, much simplified controls like on late '60's Maytag HOH dryers. I've been wanting to see an example of this dial for years! No buttons, just a control dial that did everything, including safety start, actuated by pulling the dial towards you.   It must have been a service nightmare because I know if you were in a rush and yanked that dial and allowed it to slip it would blow a house fuse or trip a breaker. The "pull-to-start" dials disappeared that same year, never to be seen again. BTW, this dryer's bigger brother, with blue where there's gold and with a fluorescent panel where there's white paint on this one, is the match to the Webmaster's "Rotary Fabric Control" washer.

What?

That's an interesting specimen too; a 1968 TOL-ish automatic dryer with the lighted canopy, no foot pedal and no delicate cycle on the automatic part of the dial. Sometimes I think GE must have had Warner Bros. cartoon characters come in on the third shift and put some of these together from parts that were left on the floor from the day's production run.

I would have to work HARD to imagine a model number; maybe DE-813D????

I contacted the seller in California and left an email and a message. It will cost me to have this shipped, but that's why I chose the small French Fries to go with my Happy Meal yesterday.

Thank you Ken, Barry & Phil!

  (ducks & runs??)

I dug through the archives and found RCD's photos, before I adopted them.   It has the 3 (or is it 6) vane, straight vane agitator.

(BTW... the top of the agitator is cleaner than that now.)
