A self-cleaning wall oven from the late 50's (JKP07) cannot lock. When the door is open, you can press the latch release and slide the latch handle all the way to the right. When the door is closed, the latch handle will not move. The slider-slot on the back of the door stays covered by a metal patch that can't be pressed in or moved. Does it sound fixable? Your comments will be greatly appreciated.

Setting the oven to self clean

Double check that you have set all the controls in the proper sequence to allow you to lock the door to begin the self-cleaning cycle. Many GE ovens have the basic procedure printed on the oven door. Without you giving much detail, my first thought is that the lock will not work until other settings are complete to initiate the self cleaning cycle.
