When we were taken into a store in the 50s, I loved to push down on the pan to watch the light come on. Back then, they were in a couple of locations in the store before the scales were put into the checkout lanes. There was a man in the produce section who weighed your produce and put a price on the bag. There was another in the meat department and one in the dairy department. The dairy person cut up large blocks or wheels of cheese and wrapped them in plastic. The folded over side was sealed with heat either from a heated metal plate or a smaller hand held iron, then weighed and a label printed and stuck on.

It's funny, I have more memories like yours too, Tom, as I went to the market with my mom as a kid, and the selection, weighing, wrapping, and marking process was a big event. Just one look at this reminded me of your same comments.
