I've had a couple of those quick brooms come and go over the years, they were interesting to say the least.
There were two causes of death, one was a broken handle neck, the other was a burned out motor. That powernozzle worked too well that the wimpy handivac motor couldn't handle it, the bag filled up and the motor burned....

Man I can remember If i close my eyes the first time I saw what has now become clearly a countrywide classic the beginning vestiges of Hooverland. Every picture that I see of yours of pastels and deep dark tones serves to note that at one time Hoover was THE vacuum cleaner manufacturer with little if NO peers.

From the little second bedroom of your place in Seward Neb, to the huge basementful of cleaners now shown..you have in my eyes surpassed anything remotely possible to create from the unfortunate vestiges of Hoovers tattered state. you have in fact recreated the "vault" that is probably long gone and destroyed by Maytag.

is the bag on that commercial convertible made of the same fabric the swingette cloth bags are made of? what, other than the bag and cord, makes this cleaner different than a regular ole convertible? thanks

Thats the same material as the swingette bag. Other than the cloth bag, and the 30' thick black cord, this is an ordinary Convertible.
The cloth bag would have given it WAY better airflow and pickup over a regular Convertible
This was the only machine to have "Hoover" embossed on the plug after Hoover started making vacuums for JCPenney in 1963.
 
about the bag...

does it have a dirt pocket? werent MOST other manufacturers using a dirt pocket in cloth bags? and when did eureka introduce a commercial upright? thanks for humouring me!! David

No dirt pocket, that didn't come about for Hoover til the later 70's
Eureka had Commercial machines back in the 60's, and they had some following, but not until something red and chrome called Sanitaire came out did Eureka really take a bite out of Hoover's commercial business

let me throw THIS out... i think that a eureka with a 3.5 amp (or 6amp and less) metal upright with the dial a nap and ball bearing agitator is a better vacuum than Hoover, convertible OR 913/u7037. any ideas why hoover didnt start using the better sealed ball bearings, or something as simple as a dirt pocket in the bag? btw, i still prefer a Hoover!

Hoover didn't use the dirt pocket because people were supposed to empty the bag...
I'd agree that your Eureka with cloth bag would be a better performer than Hoover for 2 reasons:
1 - Eureka's bag was bigger, better airflow
2 - Eureka had a better height adjuster, and sat better on the carpet than the 4 position Convertibles did.
Now if thats anything over a 4 amp Eureka, NO, as the cloth bags could not handle the high airflow of that motor.
Neither would be better than a 913, with the size of its bag, its fan, and the way it sat on the carpet, very few would out clean it!
 
the rear wheels/adjustment mechanism on four-position convertibles is soo fragile. bulky threshholds and convertibles do not mix! jeff, have you ever used your 913 in a true commercial situation? i used it at the hotel and i also once cleaned my apartments office suite (they had not vacuumed in a LONG time, bad belt on the Hoover concept they have) and, although i am devoted to my 913, am i the only one irritated at the LOOSE weave of the 913 bag? the apartments offices are located on a heavy traffic downtown avenue and when i ran it over the FILTHY entrance mat, the sun was shining in and...can you guess the rest?
 
Funny there seems to be a whole bunch of nice vintage vacs right now on Ebay in the detroit area.. one real nice Hoover with it's original box as well.

i love the roto-matic. a friend of mine got one a while back at a thrift store. with attached wheels. it is an AWESOME swivel top. the sound of the cleaner is heavenly. too bad i dont have room for it.

In my opinion the best performing Hoovers were the 2-position Convertibles. They sat perfectly on the rugs and are still viable vacuums for todays carpeting too. When it was on the market, the 2-position Convertible was the insdustry standard and no other cleaner on the market could match its performance.

I've never used my 913 or 918 Commercially, would be fun to though. Both of mine have been converted to paper bag use, by using model 63 bag tubes and bellows and then either a type W or Eureka F & G bag inside. Before I got my current carpeting I used my 918 often to clean house, it works beautifully with the paper bag.
If you wish to preserve your original bag, try a couple of vac shops and see if they have a replacement bag. That way you can get the replacement bag as dirty as you want, and keep the original for show.
 
Hi All, I'll add my two cents.
I have a 918 and a U70?? whatever the number, and I love them, they are just beautifully designed machines, but I would argue that my old Eureka commercial with 3.5amp ball bearing motor is the better cleaner. I think the closer contact with the carpet has a lot to do with it, especially the short dense commercial rugs. I also think the airflow is better. It seems the Eureka has more suction, even as the bag fills. And I don't think any Beater-bar can top a Vibra-Groomer. Rebuttals?

My gym has a Windsor and I played with it one day. I wouldn't give you dime for it. It's no contest for an old Eureka or a 918.

Eureka's bottom plate is not as good as the 913/918. Eureka hugs the carpet too much, restricting the airflow.
Even the 3.5 amp models...
 
I find on my 918 that it doesn't hug low pile commercial carpeting as well as I would like, at least when there is a little restriction on the airflow due to a dust blocked bag. I wish we could test them side by side. Going to the convention in June?

Wow Hoover 1060 what a beautiful collection of hoover vacumns i had no idea there were so many colors out there just awesome !!! i am always buying hoovers but i still have not seen colors like you have must be real early rare models but thats the fun of always looking have any idea what they cost back than Harvestgold
