Brushed chrome Hot point refrigerator

This is definitely an original finish. It was however, not stainless steel nor were the other appliances with this finish that Highpoint made. It was actually a brushed chrome finish and if badly treated, it would rust.

With the recent popularity of stainless steel appliances many people didn’t realize over the past 10 or 15 years appliances are no longer real stainless steel with just a few high end exceptions, but they have gone back to some sort of a finish, that is really just a finish on steel and they will rust ,a lot of appliances today have like plastic or wrap on steel and they can be damaged easily and there’s no way to repair them. You have to replace the whole panel.

A pleasant surprise

CircleW - thank you for the answer. I didn't know they made a brushed chrome finish. I wonder if it held a premium price like porcelain did for the 1964 Frigidaire Imperial(I have the painted and porcelain versions). This would be a special set to own, for sure.

Hotpoint finish

John, I'm going by Hotpoint's advertising for the Customline appliances. The ads for some of the items are a little vague, indicating they are available in "gleaming stainless finish" or "stainless satin-chrome". However, the specifications for the built-in cooktops plainly state "stainless steel". I don't possess any such items personally, so can only go by their advertisements of that time. I guess the best way to tell for sure is for someone who has an appliance in this finish to see if a magnet sticks. Good quality stainless steel is non-magnetic, while brushed chrome would hold a magnet. Link to 1956 ad.
