Long-long ago used a Maytag laudromat that had those "ticket" type devices.A vending machine there sold the "tickets" to run the washers and dryers.

Many laundromats in Paris and other parts of Europe use a some what similar set up, in that one pays a clerk or machine for tokens or tickets to use the machines.

Modern Twist

The laundry room in my apartment building (and at least one "coin" operated laundromat) in my area have switched to a coinless operation. You use a card, that looks like a credit card, to operate the washers (commercial Neptunes) and dryers (also Maytag). You can "add value" to the card by inserting both the card and cash (in $5.00, $10.00 and $20.00 increments) into a "validation" machine that's on the wall near the door. My landlord gave us the first card for free. Replacement cards cost $3.00 and are also dispensed by the machine. (Since the machine doesn't accept anything less then $5.00, you have to "add value" if you want to wash or dry more then one load of laundry. (The Neptune's cost $1.75 per load; the dryers cost $1.50 fo 56 minutes.)
