Hey Folks, been a while since I've posted- I just wanted to share a pic of the new washer layout that Ben and I finished up today. If we were totally overboard we'd paint the walls but this is only a semi-temporary situation. We finished pipe cutting and soldering water rails for the hot and cold supplies to handle 5 machines, and assembled the PVC drain tubing as well. Afterwards, we fired up a few machines and did some laundry with our friend Cara. What we have discovered- Ben's 806 will need a couple new belts. My 207 actually works, but also needs belts. The Westy runs great! And while the Frigidaire was running, there were some interesting clanging noises and a little afterwards, the motor continued to run but the basket was no longer spinning! Thoughts?

ALSO- Today was our Radarange Afternoon! Friday I fixed my RR-6W and we put the case on today and got things humming along. We used Ben's newly bought Amana pizza crisper and Amana RR skillet and had burgers going in one machine, pizza crisping in another, popcorn in an Amana popper going in the RR-10 and butter melting in the 4D. The food was great!

Wall-o-Washers

Wow wonderful Wall-o-Washers you guys! Is your Frigidaire washer that isn't spinning a Rollermatic or Multimatic? It looks like it could be a '64 model which could go either way depending on when it was built.

Robert,

That guy is a multimatic. You can hear the motor kick on for the spin, but the tub no longer spins. It was making some strange clinking noises before the no-spin. We thought it may have been the motor starving for power. They sounded like a solenoid, but it was probably mechanical. How do you gain access to the inside of this thing so we can inspect? Cory thinks it may be a belt...

Hi Ben it does sound like the Belt to me too, but it could be a number of things but there should not be a solenoid shifter in this machine.

The 710rpm spin Multimatic has two belts, two sets of pulleys and one clutch pad wheel. The upper belt is the spin belt and the lower belt is the agitate belt.

The system works by a clutch pad wheel that runs up and down the motor shaft depending on which direction the motor is turning. When the washer goes into agitate the motor turns counter-clockwise and the clutch pad wheel runs down the motor shaft to contact the lower agitate drive pulley. When the washer goes into spin the motor reverses to clockwise and the clutch pad wheel runs up the motor shaft and comes in contact with the upper spin pulley to drive the spin pulley/belt.

There is a little panel at the bottom back of the machine, but to work on these its really easiest to pull the whole thing out and turn it over on its left or right side so you can acess the entire mechanism from underneath the machine.

Do you guys have some Multimatic mechanism service info? If you have to replace either belt, the pump housing and the seal and impeller has to be removed first.

Cory it looks like you and Ben have done a great job. The Radar Range feast sounds like so much fun!! I too loved the shot of the Westinghouse, a real beauty. Any idea what year? Thanks so much for sharing the neat picture. Terry

Digging in the archives...

Okay Robert, I found the posting that Cory took a pic of the multimatic mechanism. It looks pretty interesting. I'm assuming I would have to take the pump cover off to get to the bolts that hold the pump housing on to the motor cover/end bell. Those belts look like belts I *may* be able to get here at Grainger, if they are a dry belt. When pulling the pump, is the seal reusable, or would we need to get a new one? Is this impeller a toughie?

Any insight will be helpful - this will be our first Frigidaire repair!!

Ben

Hi Ben, thanks for the pictures. If you look between the two pulleys on the motor you can see the clutch plate wheel that moves up and down to direct the motor force to either the upper belt or lower make. Make sure this wheel is free to move by turning it in either direction.

As for the belts I had two Multimatics and replaced the Agitate Belt with a 3L320 belt and the spin belt with a 3L280 belt, both available at Grainger or Ace Hardware. On the two Multimatic washers I had quite a few years back those belt sizes worked great, but Greg had some problems with those size belts and had to try slightly different sizes, he can tell the size belts he used. I would try the 3L320 and 3L280 first because that is what both Belt-Master books recommend for Multimatic washers.

As for the pump impeller it should be easy to get the impeller hold-down screw out because it is a nice hex-head bold and not a slotted-head screw like in the Unimatic. Your biggest challenge will be getting the actual impeller off of the shaft without breaking the rubber. You might get lucky and it might come of easily, but don't count on it. If the seal is working fine now, you should be able to reuse it without any issue, but be careful with it. If you score or scratch the seal face or copper ring in any way it might leak.

Keep us posted! If you guys need help we will be here. Post pictures if you can and have the time as you go along, it will help us answer questions you might have and makes for a great learning experience for everyone.

Great job guys! And you have some really nice machines, and some interesting light up panels. Love the Westinghouse FL! Good luck with the Multimatic.
