Water Inlet Valve 285805 Flow Restrictor

Happy Holidays! This may be a stupid question but could someone point out where the flow restrictor is on the water inlet valve or a direct drive washer? I had read somewhere on this website that it could be drilled out.

On this particular image, I am thinking it would be the small gray dot in the very middle. Does anyone have any information on what this would achieve? Increase water flow?

Flow restrictor

I think in many cases this restricts the flow of the hot water, which is why a hot fill is always so much slower than anything else. But some washers have it on both hot and cold valves, not sure about the direct drive though. I know on my Whirlpool direct drive, the cold fills relatively quickly, warm fills really fast, but hot is slooooow!

But both valves look identical? So would I just drill out the gray dot in the center on both?

What's the point of having a flow restrictor on a washer inlet valve? It's going to take the same amount of water to fill the tub, whether it flows fast or slow lol

The restrictor is typically on the hot valve and reduces the volume of hot water on a warm fill.

It lessens water hammer when the valves close
Proportioning for the "warm" temperature when both valves are open
Allowing a meaningful spray-rinse instead of just dousing
More accurate fill level measurements as the contents progressively absorb water

It's a crude "green" device to use less hot water so your clothes emerge from the washer a little more dirty.

I was able to take a needle nose pliers and remove the flow restrictors.

Will my washer do a straight warm 50/50 rinse now?

Well I installed it and the pressure is definitely improved on hot. It's like it should. Still alternates between cold and warm when set to a warm rinse. Oh well.

I guess I missed that it was a model that alternates instead of mixes the temps for filling. Yeah, no restrictor isn't going to make a difference in that case. Boo.

It looks like the new version of 285805, at least the OEM version, are no longer 50/50.
